Architecture Is Theme of Dudley Watson Talk Declaring that beauty and utility cannot be disassociated, Dudley Crafts Watson, chief lecturer on the staff of the Art Institute of Chicago, last Mon- day evening spoke at the Winnetka Community House under the auspices of the North Shore Art league on the topic of "Modern Architecture." "Architecture," said Mr. Watson, "Is the demonstration of man's faith in immortality." Explaining his topic, the speaker went on to show the de- velopment of beauty and utility hand in hand, declaring that nothing comes into its greatest usefulness until it achieves something of gracefulness and beauty. Augmenting his discussion by a num- ber of lantern slides, Mr. Watson showed something of the development of beauty in architecture in commercial buildings, notably the skyscraper, quot- ing among others Dr. Hugo Eckener to the effect that Chicago boasts an architectural present and future un- equaled anywhere in the world. Practically nothing new has been developed since the Gothic, said Mr. Watson, with the possible exception of Frank Lloyd Wright's concrete house, and the tendency is to combine well known styles making in this way some- thing suitable for the individual case and something American. This was the fourth of a series of six lectures to be given by Mr. Watson under the auspices of the North Shore Art league. His next will be Monday, December 3, on "Life and Art of the Slavic Republics."
