Maclean, of New Trier High school, faces the prospect of developing two new teams this year to meet such op- ponents as Cleveland, Roosevelt High of Chicago, Urbana, and the Morgan Park Military academy. At the final tryouts held last Friday at the high school John Erickson, a senior and member of the New Trier team which two years ago defeated Cleveland, then champion of Ohio, was named captain of this year's New Trier debaters. The ranking of six other students chosen to represent New Trier follows: Dorland Davis, second; Marjorie Koenig, third; Olin Sethness, fourth; Lowell Comee, fifth; and John Curtis, seventh. The sixth ranking debater was to be named fol- lowing a tryout this week for students who were unable to compete last Fri- day. Freshman Is Understudy John Curtis, a freshman, will be un- derstudy for this year's teams. In the tryouts on Friday he had one of the best organized cases of the group that competed, according to Coach Mac- lean. He shows promise of becoming a star debater before his high school course is finished. Dorland Davis and Marjorie Koenig, ranking second and third respectively on the debate squad, are seniors. Olin Sethness and Lowell Comee are sopho- mores and have been members of the Gavel debating club for a year. The tryouts on Friday were judged by Debate Coach Maclean, Harry Pi- fer, a member of the New Trier facul- ty, and John Erickson. Those com- peting were permitted to choose their own subjects.
