An hour of the schedule on Wed- nesday, however, was given to a Thanksgiving musicale. Miss Emily Gould and Miss Helen Lies, vocal pu- pils of Miss Mullen, the Glee club, under Prof. Otto Singenberger, direc- tor of music at the school, three vio- linists, Miss Mary Jane Sang, Miss Margaret DeMarco and Miss Marga- ret Robertson, with Miss Etta Weber, 'cellist, and the Misses Alice Robert- son and Geraldine Weber, pianists, gave the students of Mallinckrodt high school a real musical treat. The pupils were then dismissed for a two- day Thanksgiving vacation Thursday and Friday, November 29 and 30. Classes will be resumed at the usual hour the following Monday morning, December 3. Vista del Lago Gives Party for Children Club Vista del Lago was the colorful scene yesterday afternoon of a children's party, an affair to which children of members united their guests. During the afternoon of enter- tainment for the little folk, the mothers had a tea. This week two other events have been offered for the pleasure of club members. Monday was the occasion of a pivot bridge luncheon, and Thanksgiving eve a turkey dinner was served with bridge following later in the evening. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Aspenwall, 1195 Tower road, gave a family dinner party on Thnaksgiving day. There were guests from Beverly Hills and two from Wisconsin, Science as Aid to Industry, Is Topic of Chemist's Talk To those curious about the economic and scientific trends of today, there should be a fund of ideas in the lec- ture Prof. Hugh S. Taylor, head of the department of chemistry at Prince- ton university, will deliver at North- western university Thursday evening, Dec. 6, at 8. "Science, the Handmaiden of In- dustry," will be Prof. Taylor's subject. During the early days of the history of science, knowledge was sought for its own sake without any thought of its application. Prof, Taylor will show how change has come about so that a correct understanding of science has been achieved, and how the lag be- tween the discovery of fact and its useful application has become practic- ally nil until today facts are applied almost as soon as they are discovered. Prof. Taylor has gained information about industry's dependence on science through extensive research work done at Princeton. He has studied the physical and chemical properties of the catalytic materials used in such im- portant industries as the preparation of fertilizers from air, the preparation of hard fat from oils like cottonseed oil, and the more recent industries which include the preparation of wood alcohol from coal. He is English by birth and was edu- cated at the University of Liverpool, at the Noble Institute in Stockholm and at the Technische Hochschule at Hanover, Germany. He was called to Princeton from Germany early in 1914 as an instructor in physical chemistry, During the war he was employed by the British government in connection with munitions.
