"Talk the better and build the better trade." Chicago, Ill. A | | without | | mercial traffic, in so far as pavement More Substantial Paving Now Required on Highways Growing use of streets and rural | roads by heavy trucks and busses is bringing about a change in highway construction. In order not to curtail the efficiency of trucks and through load limitations, highway builders are Dbe- ing forced to construct more substan- tial pavements. The roadway of to- day is as important to commerce as steel rails. Bus travel and motor trucking are so widespread that road pavements can no longer be designed carefully considering com- busses strength is concerned. By so doing, passenger cars are more assured of bumpless travel, and heavy upkeep at- tendant with inferior roads and mas- sive vehicles is avoided. Clark, of the North Shore Battery Service of Glen- coe, Vesta representative. "Heart trouble in a car is as serious to the car as heart trouble in a human being. Of course, you can get a new 'heart' for your car, but there are ways of protecting it against the ma- jority of the troubles many car own- ers have. "Especially when the weather tem- perature goes below 50 degrees is spe- cial attention necessary, and as the thermometer goes down and down, additional care must be exercised. It really doesn't involve any great trouble, just precautionary measures--watching, is more the word. "This is all on account of the fact that in the cold season the days are shorter and you use your lights longer. Also, a cool or cold engine makes a greater strain on the battery in start- ing. "Inspect your battery more often. Have it tested more regularly, and, if it needs to be taken out and recharged at the battery station, don't hesitate to have it done. Don't think that it will 'probably' pick up as you drive, for in winter it will not pick up as quickly as in summer. It is far less costly to pay a little to have the bat- tery charged than to overload the battery and perhaps ruin it, either calil- ing for expensive repairs or the cost of a new battery. "If your lights dim suddenly, when you put your foot on the starter, that is a danger signal that your battery is not up to normal. Have it inspected at once." Pierce-Arrow to Score New Record for Exports Pierce-Arrow exports for the pres- ent year show a decided gain over the previous year, according to James C. Barber of Evanston, North Shore dealer. Exports to Holland, Japan, South America, and Switzerland were, in some cases 400 percent greater than any previous year. A number of new territories were opened up during the present year, in- cluding Portugal, Porto Rico, Panama, and Roumania. Truck shipments to Russia were es- pecially heavy during the year, the Fleet-Arrow Commercial car finding great favor in that country. Australia, the Argentine, Brazil, England, Fin- {land, Germany, Guatemala, the Philli- ipines, Spain and Venezuela bought i heavily during the year. With more than a month still to go, indications are that the present year's exports will top those of any previous vear in Pierce-Arrow history.
