Sothern Postpones Engagement The Gordon String quartet, one of the finest musical organizations of its kind in America, will present the pro- gram at the Wilmette Sunday Evening club Sunday, December 9, taking the place of E. H, Sothern, well known actor and tragedian, who has changed his date to Sunday, March 10. The Gordon String quartet, originally scheduled for that date, was able to change its date to this Sunday. Dr. Jacques Gordon is director of the quartet, which was founded in 1921. He is recognized as a notable musical leader. He is concertmaster both of the Chicago Symphony or- chestra and of the Ravinia Opera or- chestra. Born in Odessa, Russia, he was graduated from the Imperial con- servatory under Professor Stupka. At the age of 15, he came to the United States where he further perfected his art under the late Franz Kneisel. He has been a member of the Berkshire String quartet and later formed his own organization which bears his name. He has played in concerts with Harold Bauer and other artists. Noted Violinist Walter Hancock, another member of the quartet, is one of the important violinists of the Chicago Symphony orchestra. Born in England, he came to this country at an early age and studied under various masters. He was a pupil of Hugo Hermann. Clarence Evans, principal viola of the Chicago Symphony orchestra and conductor of the Chicago Rusiness Men's' orchestra, is the third member of the quartet. He studied the viola with Hugo Kortschak. He has been a member of the Berkshire String quar- tet and the San Francisco Chamber Music society and has given many viola recitals with great success. The fourth member of the group is Richard Wagner, who is one of the leaders in the cello section of the Chi- cago Symphony orchestra. Born in Canada, he studied 'cello with his father and later was principal 'celloist of the St. Paul Symphony orchestra under the late Henry Rotwell. Praised by Crities The Gordon String quartet, now in seventh season, has won recognition from the concert public as well as the press for its artistic performances. During the last two years it has had the honor to play 12 concerts under the auspices of the Library of Con- gress. It holds the record for 24 pub- lic performances in Chicago last seca- son playing to audiences of 1,000 to 1,400 at each concert, which is said to be unique in the history of a chamber music organization. Professor Theodore Koch Recounts Trip Abroad Tuesday evening, December 4, at the Georgian hotel, Professor Theodore Koch of Northwestern university gave an informal talk on his experiences during his recent trip through Europe. Professor Koch was greeted by a large group of his many Evanston {friends who greatly enjoyed his keen wit and ready humor as well as the recital of his many delightful adventures. The lecture was sponsored by the North Shore Travel service, which is affiliated with the State Bank and Trust com- pany. After it was over, members of the audience conducted a brief dis- cussion of travel experiences.
