Ss December 15, 1928 WINNETKA TALK 67 COMPLETE PERSONNEL OF N. T. DEBATE TEAMS Groups in Diligent Practice Engagements for Regular Inter-Scholastic Schedule Albert Denton and Lois Goldstein, sophomores at New Trier High school, have been added to the list of five debaters who will represent New Trier in inter-school matches this year. They were chosen after the final postponed tryouts held last week. Other regulags on the teams will be John Erickson, Dorland Davis, and Marjorie Koenig, seniors, and Olin Sethness and Lowell Comee, sophomores. John Curtis, a promising freshman debater, is the un- derstudy. Debate Coach Chester E. MacLean will direct the work of one group, con- sisting of Sethness, Denton, Comee, and Curtis, while John Erickson, the only veteran on this year's New Trier de- bate teams, will have charge of the other group including himself, Davis, Miss Koenig, and Miss Goldstein. Fre- quent practice clashes will be held be- tween these groups, Coach MacLean announced this week. Announce Debate Schedule New Trier's debate schedule remains the same as previously announced. The opponents will be Roosevelt High school of Chicago, Urbana, Morgan Park Military academy, and Cleveland. A forensic council has been organized at New Trier consisting of Ray Ring- son, manager of debates, George Camp- bell, assistant manager, Solon Reily, entertainment committee chairman, and George Weidinger, publicity agent. This council will assist Coach MacLean in arranging the schedule of debates, the entertainment of judges and visiting teams, and other mattess connected with the debate program. The council will meet weekly. Will Entertain Visitors Last year when New Trier debaters met Cleveland there a delegation of business men met the team at the train, and a program of entertainment was provided, including a tour of the city and a visit to one of the large theaters. This year the New Trier forensic coun- cil is planning similar entertainment when the Cleveland team comes here on May 10 for the third clash between the two schools. In the two previous debates the teams divided honors, New Trier winning the first and Cleveland the second. Employment Bureau Aids Many Students at State University . Working one's way through college is a difficult job but not as difficult as most people think, Through the Y. M. C. A. employ- ment bureau at the University of Illi- nois, 1,033 different students have been placed in permanent and odd jobs so far this year, enabling them to earn a large proportion of their school ex- penses and thereby carry on their edu- cation. A total of 2,186 odd jobs and 545 per- manent jobs have been found for needy students, all of whom are inter- viewed beforehand to determine their actual needs. In this way, only those students who are in dire need of out- side help are benefited. Last year 1,329 men were able to earn more than $200,000 toward their college educa- ion. The employment bureau at the uni- versity is supervised and directed by a committee of forty students who work continuously lining up jobs for their fellow students. A good many of the openings are phoned in, but many are obtained by scouting around through the "Twin Cities." Every man who needs work is registered at the bureau so that he may be found at any time outside work is available. The jobs range all the way from window washing and waiting tables to selling articles and firing furnaces, in- cluding every type of work that one can imagine, That students are coming to the uni- versity with more money in their pock- ets to begin on than ever before is the opinion of the Y. M. C. A. employ- ment bureau. Men who have not sufficient money to begin on are usually urged to go back to their home towns to get work rather than to look for jobs at the university, Such men always return a year later with several hundred dol- lars saved up. By using a small amount of their saving each year and by receiving outside help, they are able to go four years with little difii- culty.
