Christmas Eve will be celebrated by the presentation of "Die Walkyrie," the Wagnerian work which, at its first appearance this season, displayed the talent of Mme. Frida Leider, the new German soprano, and that of the re- || mainder of the cast so effectively that a record was set for artistic production of the spectacular opera. With Mme. Leider, Mme. Maria Olszewska, For- rest Lamont, Edouard Cotreuil and Alexander Kipnis, the original cast is retained. Christmas night has been considered an appropriate time for the injection of comedy into the bill and "The Barber of Seville" is the work chosen for an audience wearied by the demands of the holiday. The cast is exceptionally well balanced, Margherita Salvi, new Spanish colorature soprano, having the '| part of Rosina, and Tito Schipa that of Count Almaviva. Constance Eber- hart, Lodovico Oliviero, Vittorio Trevisan, Virgilio ILazzari, Richard Bonelli, Eugenio Correnti and Gildo Morelato make up the remainder of the cast. The holiday program now announced will close with the gala performance on New Year's Eve of "Norma" with Rosa Raisa in the title role and Charles Marshall in the part of Pollione, Coe Clade, Alice d'Hermanoy, Lodovico Oliviero and Virgilio Lazzari also hav- ing parts in the delightful old work of Bellini. Aside from the presentations selected for the actual holidays, the principal event for the week will be the first production, on Thursday evening, of "Der Rosenkavalier," the third of a cycle of German operas arranged, for the present season. Frida Leider will appear again in the work of Richard Strauss, with Edith Mason and Maria Olszewska, in the three leading female roles. Robert Ringling and Alexander Kipnis will sing the leading male roles and the remainder of the cast will be made up of Alice d'Hermanoy, Irene Pavloska, Lodovico Oliviero, Jose Mojica, Antonio Cortis, Antonio Nico- lich and Louis Derman. The week begins with the Sunday matinee performance of "Carmen," which will be made distinctive by the initial appearance of Coe Glade, Chi- cago soprano, who has scored distinct successes in "Aida," "Faust" and "Boris Godunoff." Miss Glade's characteriza- tion of the famous gypsy will be the second offered by the Chicago Civic Opera company this season, Maria Olszewska having formerly sung the part. Wednesday evening, the day after Christmas, will be given another pres- entation of "The Tales of Hoffman," one of the most colorful works from both a musical and scenic standpoint that has been given this season. Rene Maison will again be in the role of Hoffman while Marion Claire and Helen Freund will portray the three loves of the poet. Vanni Marcoux sings the four roles of the arch plotter against Hoffman and Irene Pavloska has the attractive part of Hoffman's companion, Niclaus. Ada Paggi, Desire Defrere, Edouard Cotreuil, Barre Hill, Lodovico Oliviero, Jose Mojica and Antonio Nicolich are assigned to fill the other parts. At the Satwrday matinee a second performance of Halevy's powerful drama, "The Jewess," will be given with Frida Leider and Charles Marshall in the roles of Rachel and Eleazar. Alexander Kipnis sings the part of Cardinal Brogni, Alice Mock that of Princess FEudossia, and Jose Mojica that of Prince Leopold.
