LOOKS WELL BUT LACKS FORCE. Word from Chicago brings the news that, as a result of action taken there recently by representatives of the Poster Advertising Association, be- ginning with next year when new con- tracts go into effect, advertisements of spirituous liquors will disappear from a majority of the billboards in the United States, Canada, Cuba, Porto Rico and Hawaii, in which countries the Poster Advertising As- sociation controls the billboards of 4,000 towns and cities. According to a resolution adopted by the Associa- tion it would appear that vinous and malt liquors will continue to be ad- vertised. This is another step in the move- ment for prohibition that is sweeping over the world. That a large amount of good will be accomplished by it is doubtful. Taken from the standpoint of morals the liquor advertisements are not so suggestive as those of vari- ous makes of lingerie scattered in the pages of the best class of maga- zines and from an artistic point of view a sketch of a white haired, dis- clubman toasting the shadowy forms of the dear women in his memory on a lonely Christmas Eve or one of a table with a book, cigarette, pair of riding gloves and glass of beer is far beyond anything as yet printed with a new make of hosiery or underwear for its theme. It will be interesting to see whether the vinous and malt liquors will fol- low the ones condemned. The local and state authorities are largely re- sponsible for the continuance of Jiquor advertisements in public places. When a state goes dry naturally the pos- ters suggesting spirituous liquid re- freshment follow suit. It seems to be largely a matter of business on the part of the Poster Advertising As- sociation. Prohibition is gaining ground with rapidity. That the soldiers may be better fitted to kill each other absinthe unpopular in France, vodka in Russia and whiskey in Eng- land. Instead of a man being allowed the right to drink himself to death he is kept in fine fettle that he may kill some other man. In this condi- tion of things posters have no effect one way or the other. Where a coun- try is at peace and the effort of the prohibitionists is to prevent crime, promote industry and decrease the rate in mortality the absence of liquor posters in a state still wet create slight comment but a party of jolly men full of good fellowship, partly natural and part acquired, is' a live opposition advertisement that gathers strength in its progress.
