It is, of course, necessary that writ- ers of historical reminiscences be mas- ters of a certain amount of accurate information about their heroes if they are to avoid mistakes. There is an amusing instance of how one writer, lacking such information, got things mixed with reference to an incident in the life of the great Nelson. Not so long ago a reviewer in a Lon- don paper, criticizing a book on Nel- son, related on his own account the following episode of the eminent Brit- ish naval commander: "While in chase of Villeneuve's French fleet he was informed of the enemy heaving in sight, at which in- formation Nelson evinced the highest satisfaction and gleefully rubbed his hands." Whereupon some one immediately pointed out that this incident had oc- curred in 1805, and that Nelson had lost his right arm in the attack on Santa Cruz, Teneriffe, in 1797--eight years prior to his pursuit of Ville neuve's fleet. All That Proves. "How's he getting along?" "Very well. He says he's had his pay raised three times in the last six months." "That proves only one thing." "What?" "That his ability to brag about him self has improved remarkably."--De: troit Free Press. Lotus nuts, or lily flower seeds, a fa- vorite edible of the Chinese, are eaten whole or are ground up and made inta a kind of arrowroot flour. Region Produces Much Tale. That Gouverneur region of New York is by far the largest talc pro- ducer in the United States. Years ago its output of talc was greater than that of all other talc-producing local ities in this country combined, and the mineral is in places worked to a depth of 500 feet. Mature Ambition. After a man has passed fifty, he would rather have a good stomach than the shoulders of a Gotch.--Houston Post. Sure His Time Had Come. It happened in an English hospital ward that at the moment when a pa- tient was just recovering conscious- ness on his return to bed from the op- erating theater a Wesleyan minister and two clerical friends came walking in to pay a visit. The patient started up and stared at the trio of black coats. "Great Scott!" he exclaimed. "The undertakers!" "THE SECRET KINGDOM" AT WILMETTE THEATRE Romantic Serial at Local Play House --First Two Episodes Will Be Shown Next Monday. The Wilmette Theatre will start, next Monday night, a serial photo- play, "The Secret Kingdom," which is shown in fifteen episodes, one two-reel play being scheduled for each week. This photo-drama, a Vitagraph pro- duction, is attracting widespread at- tention, and, from all reports, it is filled with human interest from start to finish. The first two episodes are three-reel pictures, and they will both be shown Monday night. They look good, as the following synopsis shows: "THE LAND OF INTRIGUE" The First Episode of "THE secepr KINGDOM" King Philip... sees Charles Richman Prime Minister Simond.Joseph Kilgour Simond's daughter...... Then, with his sovereign unpopular, Simond feels it a good time to strike the blow, so he hires two villains to assasinate the king, Phillip II, and Queen Alixe, while they are hunting in the royal forests. Captain Barreto, commander of the Alanian palace guard, and a loyal friend o fPhillip II, realizes Simond's dastardly plan, and when he hears him issue an order for the apprehen- sion of the little Crown Prince--the only obstacle remaining in his path to the throne, he dashes off with him to America, with the aid of Juan, a fisherman. Barreto makes arrangements with Juan to keep in communication with his brother, Lieutenant Barreto, who will inform him of the events in Alania. Simond proclaims himself Prince Regent, and with a bold bid for popu- larity, rescinds the obnoxious tax bill which he was instrumental in creating --his first official act. Meanwhile Captain Barreto and the Crown Prince arrive in the harbor of New York and sight the great Statue of Liberty which rises before them symbolic of the land to which they are journeying where there are no kings and where prince and pauper have the same say in the government of the country. De Jalma West Gh TR Se William Dunn The second episode of Vitagraph's romantic serial, "The Secret Xing- dom," entitled "Royalty at Red Wing," tells how after twenty years Phillip Barr, the rightful King of Alania, but entirely in ignorance of the fact, having been raised on Red Wing Ranch, Arizona, by "Peter Barr," whom he believes to be his father, rescues from the clutches of a frontier bad man, "Julia Simond," who is in reality Princess Julia, only daughter of Simond. Julia has been traveling in the United States in- cognito. Forthwith, they fall in love with each other, but Julia leaves to con- tinue her journey on the next train. Back in Alania, but one obstacle prevents Simond's declaring himself king--proof of the death of Prince Phillip. He learns of the whereabouts of Captain Barreto through an inter- cepted letter, and despatches Monsieur and Madam Savatz, secret agents, to the United States to assassinate Phillip Savatz and his wife arrive at Red Wing Raneh and pose as cattle buy- ers from Paris. Juan, son of the helped Captain Barreto and the Prince to escape, years before, is despatched to America by Lieut, Bar- reto, brother of Peter Barr, to warn him that Simond has learned of his whereabouts. He arrives in time to bare the spies' plot, and in the fight that follows, both Savatz_and Phillip's supposed father, Peter Barr, are killed. Dying, Peter Barr charges Juan, "Don't let Phillip know yet, that he is rightful king of dd fisherman who Kind of Neighbor He Liked. Lawyer--"What sort of a neighbor is he?" Witness--"Best one I ever had. Lived next to him five years." "Then you know him intimately?" "Never spoke to him.'--Life. Evolution of Orange. The orange was originally a pear- shaped fruit about the size of the com- mon wild cherry. Its evolution is be- lieved by naturalists to be due to 1,200 years of cultivation. Pessimist's Viewpoint. "Father," said the small boy, "what's an optimist?" "An optimist, my son, is a man who tries so hard to be cheer- ful that you feel sorry to see him over- working himself."--Washington Star Tact. "How shall I close this letter to Slowpay--'yours truly' or 'respectful- ly?» "Say 'respectfully,' but add, in paren- theses, 'for the last time.' "--Fliegende Blaetter. Andaman islanders, lowest of sav- ages, think that earthquakes are caus- ed by the spirits of the dead, who, im- patient at the delay of the resurrec- tion, shake the palm trees on which they believe the earth to rest. ADDRESSES GUILD. Rev. Joseph Clark, a missionary from Ikoko, Congo Belge, Africa, will address the Guild, Tuesday afternoon, January 30, at the home of Mrs. Wm. McKenzie, 1185 Laurel avenue, Hub- bard Woods. NICK HAS NEW BOSS. Nello Matteoni, of Matteoni Brothers Confectionery store on Elm street, was married, Saturday morning, to Miss Pia Gemignani, at St. Phillip's church, in Chicago. They are spend- ing their honeymoon in Northern Wis- consin. : MEN'S CLUB DINNER. The Men's club of the Congregation- al church will have its regular monthly dinner, Monday evening, at the Com- munity house rooms. An enjoyable time is anticipated. Shooting a Fish. A fact known by every one is the peculiar apparent bending of a stick when thrust into clear water. It is due to the refraction or bending of light. Now, if one saw a fish in fresh water and desired to shoot it the gun must be pointed under the fish, for it must be remembered that the fish ap- pears as did the submerged end of the stick--too far up. If the fish was directly under the observer, however, the light would not be bent, and it could be shot straight at, Dye It. The use of osage orange for making dyes promises to be extensive. The forest products laboratory is making a census which shows that the supply of the wood is more than ample to meet present needs. One Formality. "Oh, joy! She has written a letter saying she will marry me." "Congratulations. When?" "Well--er--you see her father has to 'ndorse this promissory note before it's good." Valuable Reputation. The very reputation of being strong- willed, plucky and indefatigable is of priceless value. It cows enemies and dispels opposition to our undertakings. --Charles Darwin. White Heather, White heather is not so rare as many people imagine. Albino freaks of all kinds of heath and heather are often found, especially among the ling or truck heather--Calluna vulgaris--and more frequently on the downs of Sur- rey and Sussex than in Scotland. The superstition that white heather brings luck to the wearer admits of some ra- tional explanation, because a success- ful searcher would probably possess diligence, perseverance, mental alert- ness and other qualities.--London Mail.
