R 7 74 4] WHER K \/ A 1) DAY, Wi AY 18, 1917. EOE RE RE ie New Trier Girls Wi Fairy Pageant at High School Il Present HE physical training depart- ment for girls at the New Trier High school will present a pageant on June 8 in the high school gym- nasium. The story part of the pageant, "A Dream Fantasy" was written by Miss Helen Hootman, physical director of the high school girls. Miss Margaret Tozier, assistant physical director, will assist Miss Hootman in training the 200 mem- bers of the girls' department who will take part in the dances. Twelve original dances will feature the pro- gram with a group of well known dances worked in with the numbers. Story of Pageant. The music will be under the direc- tion of Mr. Homer Cotton. Costumes and an indirect lighting system for the presentation which will be held indoors on account of the bad weather prevalent in this community for the past several weeks, are fea- special tures being arranged by the dir- ectors. The story begins with an Earth Child playing with a bird in a garden, the child falls asleep and wakes up to find herself in the land of dreams playing with the elves. The elves bring the Spirit of 'Dreams to see the Earth Child and she conducts her on a tour through the night. They wander in the Land of the Elves, see Dewdrops, Fire Flies, Shadows, and Wood Nymphs. The Stars then take charge of the Earth Child and takes her to the throne of the Queen of Night and the God- dess of the Moon. At the throne oi the Goddess they find the Spirits of flowers and dreams. Silver 'moths, bats, owls and the Spirit of Fire dance for the Earth Child. Then the Demons of Dark- ness come to frighten the Earth Child but they are driven away by Dawn which is followed by the Sun and her Sunbeams. The pageant ends when the new day is ushered in and the Spirits of the Night bid fare- well to the Farth Child and they re- turn to their abode. Leading Characters. The story is cleverly worked out and the music and dances are care- fully planned to present the fairyland spirits with their pretty costumes in a most attractive manner. The girls taking leading roles in the pageant include 'Elizabeth Duf- fy, Earth "Child; Florence Hahn, Spirit of Dreams; Virginia Thomp- son, Queen of the Night; Margaret Zimmerman, Dream of Horror; Clara Hudson, Dream of Humor; Beatrice and Florence Pease, Dreams of Romance; Ethel Flentye, Spirit of Fire; Helen Skinner, Dawn; and Sarah Gallagher, Sun. BS ES Es EE BOYS AND GIRLS EMULATE BETSY ROSS WITH COLORS Impressive Ceremony at Flag Rais- ing of Sacred Heart School. The children of the Sacred Heart school imbued with the spirit of pat- riotism desired 'that the Stars and Stripes should float over their school. Emulating the example of Betsy Ross of Revolutionary fame, they conceived the idea of making the flag entirely by their own hands. Under the guidance of the sisters, all the pupils, both boys and girls of the seventh and eighth gredes, un- dertook the task of making the flag. The flag is six feet wide and nine feet long and was completed Wed- nesday. Not wishing to be out-classed by their older schoolmates and desir- ous of showing their loyalty and patriotism, the children frem the first to the sixth grade inclusive, sig- nified their intention by donating the flag-pole. Incidentally, the day chosen for the raising of the flag, was Ascension Thursday, May 17. The following program was ren- Mr. and Mrs. M. E.
