-- -- WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, FRIDAY, MARCH 28, 1919 Gens New Trier Sport Notes FEATHERS TRIM OAK PARK IN TIGHT GAME; SEE CHAMPIONSHIP AHEAD Our battling featherweights put a crimp in Oak Park's splendid chance for the championship in their class by trimming them in a clean and in- tensely interesting game, 10 to 6, at New Trier Friday evening. A tight battle was to be expected. Neither team had been credited with a defeat before the game and both had an excellent chance to win. The first quarter ended with Oak Park leading 3 to 2. The first half looked | better for New Trier as they finished it in the lead, 4 to 3. At the end of the third quarter the teams were tied, 6 to 6. In the last quarter the entire | local team seemed to be possessed by a mania for real basketball as they held Oak Park scoreless and shot two baskets themselves. As in every game that Oak Park and New Trier play each other there were very few fouls and a splendid exhibition of sportsmanship on both sides. But New Trier cannot claim the championship until she meets Oak Park again, this time at Oak Park. The game will probably be played this week instead of next week and the followers of the team are all expect- ed and urged to accompany the team and yell themselves hoarse as neces- sary to help win the game, as much depends on the outcome. And don't forget to give due credit to their | able coach, Jack Paterson, who has! shown a wonderful "knowledge of the game by building up the team to its present standard. | | | | I ( | LANE TO MEET NEW TRIER FOR SWIM TITLE HERE FRIDAY NIGHT | que en Lane Tech, the professed prep champions of the Middle West in the swimming line, will meet New Trier Friday evening to dispute their rights to that title. New Trier is ready for the meet, and although they expect a hard fight they feel confident of coming out ahead. It all depends on the standing of one fellow, named Miller, on the Lane lineup. Certain people claim he is ineligible, which if true, gives New Trier a rather fine chance for taking the meet more easily. New Trier is strengthened by th addition of Carpenter who was found to be a wizard in the plunge while competing in the Intra-Mural meet. La Grange Wins from Lights I.a Grange won from New Trier lightweights Friday evening 23 to 17 but marred their victory by a display | of the worst brand of basketball] seen on the Kenilworth floor this) year. All of the players were con- siderably taller than the local boys and seemed to delight in striking them in the ribs, tripping them up, | and otherwise generally spoiling a | very interesting game. They did these stunts behind the referee's back so that only a few of the many fouls they perpetrated were called on them. An interesting feature of the game was the "boner" pulled off by | Speer, a La Grange guard. In the] last half he became unduly excited | and neatly tossed the ball into the New Trier basket, amid the laughs | of a delighted crowd. Cadet Dance Saturday All cadets, their lady friends and their parents are invited to the dance to be given by the corps Saturday evening. No one else need come as they will not be admitted to the hall, but all cadets are urged to come. Faculty Game Thursday New Trier faculty team goes to Deerfield Thursday afternoon for a game. These games are very popular with the schools and a large crowd is expected. Heavies Trim Evanston > . = . 1 I'he heavyweights scored easily against Evanston Saturday afternoon and won 27 to 10. It was a second division game.
