McAdoo Challenges Mothers, Fathers and Friends of Boy Scouts to Boost Fund A nation-wide campaign to enlist 1,000,000 associate members into the Boy Scouts of America, will be con- ducted during the week of June 8-14, dates inclusive. Former Secretary of Treasury and Director General of Railroads, William G. McAdoo, who is chairman of the Citizens' National committee, has issued the following ~appeal to the mothers and fathers of American boys which embodies the purpose of Boy Scout Week. The communication reads: To the Mothers and Fathers of Am- + erican Boys: The Congress of the United States, recognizing the value of proper train- ing of American boyhood, granted a special charter for the organization of the Boy Scouts of America. This organization mow embraces 375,000 splendid boys; but this is a very small proportion of the 10,000,000 Am- erican boys between the ages of twelve and twenty-one who ought to be given the benefit of Boy Scout discipline, training and practice. The future of the Nation depends, of course, upon its youth. The fathers and mothers of Amszrican boys will be gravely derelict in par- ental duty and in National obligation if they fail to give their hearty sup- port, moral and financial, to this great American Boy Scout move- ment. Not only is every Boy Scout given useful knowledge and training which equips him better for the battle of life, but there are inculcated in him the duties, obligations, ideals and higher conceptions of American citizenship. Fach year the Boy Scout movement is turning out thousands of better boys and creating the finest types of future American patriots. No cause should appeal more strongly to the mothers and fathers of America than the Boy Scout cause. . The Boy Scouts raised several hundred million dollars in the Lib-| erty Loan and War Savings Stamp | campaigns. They did splendid work | for the Red Cross in its several na-| tional campaigns. They served the Government in many other effective] ways during the great world war. It] is an organization of gallant patriots | and deserves the encouragement and support of the nation. The week beginning June 8 and ending June 14 has been st apart as Boy Scout week for the purpose of enlarging and strengthening the Boy Scout organization. Associate mem- berships in the Boy Scout organiza- tion will be offered to thz mothers and fathers of American boys and to other adult American citizens. This, if successful, will provide a support- ing adult organization to the Boy Scouts of America which will assure the enlarged usefulness and effactive- ness of the Boy Scout movement. Surely there are five million Am- erican men and women who are will- ing to help the boys of America to; become the best of all American citizens. Surely there are millions of other American citizens who are willing to contribute a small sum to put the Boy Scout organization on a strong and permanent basis which will assure the continuous training of the youth of America in the finer ideals and conceptions of citizenship in the greatest democracy of the earth. : This worthy cause stands alongside the Red Cross and other human- itarian organizations which have had the generous support of the Am- erican people. In the name of Am- erica's best boyhood, I beg America's manhood and womanhood to help. W. G. McAdoo. CAMP ROOSEVELT OPEN TONORTH SHORE BOYS R. O. T. C. Camp at Muskegon, Michigan, Will Accomodate 15,000 High School Students Boys from the North Shore will be invited to a Reserva Officers' Train- 'ing Camp at Lake Michigan this summer. The encampment has been named Camp Roosevelt, as a living memorial to the dead statesman, and 15,000 men and boys will be given a period of intensive military-physical- educational training there between July 6 and August 31. Captain F. is Beals of the United States army will be the commanding officer. Train High School Boys Camp Roosevelt is being establish- ed at Muskegon, Michigan, as a training place for the Chicago High school boys who are in the Reserve Officers' training corps, but it is not necessary to be from Chicago or to have had previous military training to be a Camp Roosevelter. It will be an all-age, all-American camp, open to recruits between the ages of 12 and 45. The military training will include drills, machine gun practice, ground aviation, radio instruction and other military features. The physical training will include calisthenics, baseball, tennis, golf, swimming, row- ing and hiking. The educational training will be under the direction of Chicago High school instructors and will cover all high school sub- jects. This feature is optional with the recruit. Non-Profit Making Camp Roosevelt is not a profit- making institution. It is being fin- anced by a committee of patriotic Chicago citizens who believe that it may pave the way to a program of national preparedness at all times. The charge, as far as the recruit is concerned, is only $1 per day to cover subsistence and equipment, and an! enrollment fee of $1. This will pay | for all expenses at the camp, includ- ing board, necessary equipment, in- struction and a tent to sleep in.
