Dinner at Woman's Club, "= { | { | At a called meeting of the melo | bers of the Wilmette Baptist 'church | held at the Wilmette Woman's club, Tuesday evening, June 17, following the annual dinner served by the women of the church, plans for con- struction 'of a church edifice were read and upanimously approved by | the members who immediately sub- stantiated their endorsement by sub- scribing $21,000 as-the initial fund to | commence the work of construction. The money was sugscribed within twenty minutes after §he plans were | approved. % The proposed church edifice'yis to be erected at the nortRzeast corner of Wilmette and Forest {cme he resolution of the Buildin& committee of the church calls for conipletion, as | soon as possible, of the church audi- torium and the entire ground floor, | although sentiment among the mem- | bers was strongly in favor of the] erection of the entire plant, without | delay, which includes a modern Sun- | day school and Social work equip-| ment on the north end of the lot. Complete Modern Equipped The building is to be of stone, the | auditorium seating capacity being approximately 400. On tha ground floor there is to be a spacious dining room and modern kitchen equipment | arranged to accomodate either large or small social gatherings. Howard Bowen, a member of the church, is the architect. Work on the building is expected to begin early in September and the structure opened for occupancy by next spring. War Halted Building The Baptist church, the youngest ©of Wilmette church organizations, had planned erection of a structure shortly before the outbreak of the war. The consequent ban on build- ing operations thromghout the coun- try, only recently lifted yglelayid the work many months. 4 \ During the war the congregation, which meets in the Wilmette Wom- | an's club, was without the rzgular :services of a pastor, with the Rev- +erend Francis C. Stifler in the war service of the Y. M. C. A. The pastor has evidenced steady progress in beginning of the year and the church has been back at his post since the membership as well as financially. It! is predicted the present building pro- | gram will result in one of the most | excellently equipped church buildings | on the north shore. ERRORS UPSET DOPE: WILMETTE COPS 11-2 On the afternoon of Memorial Day | Wilmette defeated the Glencoe base- | ball team 9 to 2. On the following | Sunday, June 1, Winnatka defeated] the same team 19 to 1. Therefore when they hooked up with Wilmette Sunday at the Winnetka field they were confident that Wilmette would ibe an easy victim to their prowess. | They story of how they were sadly disappointment is a simple one. { First reports were that "Smiling! Wilmette pounded four more in the eighth and the Win- netkans gave up. Errors lost the game for Winnet- ka. Anderson who played first base during the first two innings couldn't hang on to the pill and 'his errors put Woods, the pitcher, in a hole. In the second inning the errors were repeated. In fact Wilmette made only three hits to score their first seven runs. He clamped the "Strangler Lewis" hold for the fall. The second fall was but a repetition of the first. Braun was out of danger at all times. He broke the holds Hlavacek clamped on him with apparent ease. After 34 minutes Hlavacek took the second timz when Braun used the "Half Nelson" and "Strangler Lewis" holds successfully. It was plainly a match of skill and speed against strength, and "strength" lost. Hlavacek depended on the head-lock and toehold while Braun's chief weapon was the "Strangler Lewis" hold which he used so much that his opponent's head and shoulders ached considerably during the entire match.
