Increase of Sweets Make Sugar Shortage North Shore Sugar Broker Explains One Reason for Excessive Cost of Essential Commodity An enormous increase in the amount of candy and other sweets used in the United States during the last few months is given by Howard Van S. Tracy, Evanston, as one of the causes for the scarcity of sugar in America. Mr. Tracy is director of the Holland-St. Louis Sugar company. J. Rex Allen, Evanston, supported Mr. Tracy's statement by submitting to the Chicago municipal bureau of foods, markets and farm products an itemized list showing what Chica- go candy manufacturers had purchas- ed sugar since the United States army surplus was placved on the market. How much was bought by each firm was shown. It had been charged that candy makers were rejected as purchasers of the army stock. Mr. Allen gave testimony before the hearing last Saturday which showed that the as- sertions were unbased. "Sugar will cost consumers $225,- 000,000 more this year than last," Mr. Allen also stated, "because of an in- crease of about 2 1-2 cents a pound in the base price." Mr. Tracy stated that the per cap- ita consumption of sugar has increas- ed the last six months from 85 to 104 pounds a year. SCHOOLS HERE TO BOOST FIRE PREVENTION DAY Governor Designates October 9 As Illinois Clean-Up Day; Exercises In All Schools Expected Governor Lowden has designated October 9 the time for a general clean-up of alleys, basements and all places where refuse accumulates. The school children will be apprised of the meaning of the day and will be asked to co-operate in cleaning up every town and village in the state. Fire chief G. M. Houren, of the Winnetka department has endorsed the precepts of the proclamation and urges every Winnetkan to co-operate in the movement. In the proclamation Governnor Lowden urges fire drills in every school and educational exercises to impress upon the children and in turn their parents of the urgent nec- essity for conservation through ap- plication of fire prevention methods. The proclamation stipulates: That there be a general clean-up of waste and rubbish in public and private places to reduce the danger of fire and to promote health; That a thorough inspection be giv- en all heating apparatus, chimneys, electric wiring and ventilating devic- es and necessary repairs made to in- sure safe operation during the winter; That hotels, factories, churches, theaters and all public and private places where people congregate be carefully evamined and every safe- guard be provided to protect the liv- es of the occupants; That competent watchmen be en- gaged, if watchman service is not al- ready maintained, at all buildings where manufacturing is carried on or goods are stored in important quan- tities; That fire drills be held and con- tinued thereafter at frequent inter- vals in schools, factories and public buildings, and that occupants be thoroughly acquainted with the best |; and safest means of exit in case of emergency ; That local public officials give special attention to the need for best possible building regulations, fire pre- vention ordinances and means of pro- tection against fire; g That general educational exercises be held, especially in the schools, to impress upon the people the urgent | necessity of this great work of con- servation and to stimulate a sense of personal responsibility in carrying it out. INJURED IN FIRST GRIDIRON ACCIDENT The first gridiron accident of the season occurred Sunday at the Wil- | mette field. The Ouilmette eleven were scheduled to meet the Highland Park team at 2:30 o'clock in their first game of the season. After a two hours' wait in which time the Highland Park aggregation failed to put in their appearance, the Ouil- mette boys divided up for a little scrimmage work. J. L. Allabough, Jr., 1505 Oak avenue, who was about to be made right half, was handled a little roughly in an end run and suf- fered a sprained knee which promises to keep him out of the running for the rest of the month. Allabough was a new and promising addition to the team and will be missed. "It's a mighty good thing," said Uncle Eben, "dat de Ten Command- ments was handed down direct, in- stead of bein' 'bliged to go through de hands of a lot of eommittees."
