WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1919 SUNSET ROAD STATION At the Council meeting on Tuesday evening, December 2, the Council considered the question of the abandonment of the Sunset Road station of the Chicago. North Shore and Milwaukee Electric railroad, re- ceiving communications on the sub- ject from the Winnetka Improvement association and from members of the Indian Hill Improvement association. As a result, it was decided to request the Indian Hill Improvement asso- ciation to appoint a committee to in- vestigate.and report on the possibility of making the existing station safer for the public. The matter will be held in abeyance until this commit- tee has had an opportunity to report. It should be explained that this matter has been under consideration ! by the Village Council for several months as one of the problems re- lative to improving safety provisions on the railroads in Winnetka. RUBBISH DISPOSAL The problem of the disposal of tin cans, bottles and other rubbish col- lected throughout the Village is be- coming more and more of a problem. as the available dumps become filled up. During the past two years the Village has been dumping on lots owned in the Skokie, from which the black dirt was previously removed. These lots have now been filled, and the Village is confronted with the problem as to where future accumula- tions may be placed. The Council is considering plans for the future whereby rubbish may be utilized for filling in at the lake shore, in order to provide additional land for park purposes, but these plans cannot be realized for some time in the future. The method of disposal in the Skokie is considered to be very unsatisfactory from the standpoint of appearance, but seems to be the only available way of hand- ling the situation present. It is possible that during the next year or in two it may be necessary to con- tinue this method of rubbish dis- posal, until other plans have been worked out. ASH COLLECTIONS The rapid growth of the Village and the advent of cold weather has placed a severe tax on the equipment of the Village which is available for the collection cf ashes. In order to enable the Public Works department to give first-class service, the Coun- cil authorized at the last meeting the purchase of a steel dump body and hoist to be installed on the old Packard fire truck. This will give the Village an additional dump truck which: can be used very effi- ciently /in connection with the col- lection of ashes during the coming winter. N. J. The Waste Disposal Ordi- nance of the Village requires that all garbage and ashes be placed in containers located outside the build- ing at a point easily accessible to the collector. However, in order to ac- commodate persons who find it in- convenient to place their ashes out- side, the Village provided last year a special rate of 25 cents per month to cover the cost of removing the ashes from the basement. It is now found that this rate is entirely in- adequate to cover the cost and it therefore becomes necessary to in- crease the rate to $1 per month which is the actual cost of the added serv- ice. This rate became effective on December 1 and will continue in ef- fect until April 30. SKATING RINKS W. A. Gibbon, Superintendent of Public Works, is making arrange- ments for several public skating rinks, in accordance with the custom in previous years. It is expected that these rinks can be flooded for use in the near future.
