& WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MARCH 13, 1920 HERE'S LETTER SHE WROTE TO DR. BROWN Amy McIntyre Writes To Winnetka Women In Serbia--Sends Money Raised By Schcol Children It's all wrong. That letter-poem which little Amy Macintyre is said to have written to Dr. Alice Barlow-Brown who is do- ing relief work in Serbia, and which was published recently in the TALK was only the work of a few moments, dished off in a moment of inspira- SL On, So the joke's on the TALK-or per- haps it is on little Miss Macintyre herself. The published poem was included in a number of writings placed at the disposal of the editor. So, in order that the many admir- ers of the little juvenile writer may not gain the impression that Amy has altered her usually dignified style for a more or less free verse type, the copy of the letter which has now been forwarded with $40 in cash, rais- ed by Winnetka school children, is published below: Dear Dr. Brown: I am writing my letter in behalf of the school children. The draft I am sending for $39.67 is the amount raised by the sale of Christmas Cards. I also enclose the three new designs used this year for the cards which were painted by the designers. : The painting was done by the eight grade boys of Horce Mann School Herman Shubert who is out of school helped a great deal. Marion Schell provided the boxes and made the postcards, which was quite a job consldering the number of cards. Elizabeth Richards had charge of the sales at Horace Mann, Jannet Gordon at Skokie and I had charge of them at Greeley. At Christmas time when we had an exhibition of our seasons' work the cards were painted, and sold rapidly and as we had heard there was so much proverty and suffering in Serbia we decided to send the money to you to use in your work. This suggestion was made by Miss-- who planned the exhibition and help- ed us to prepare and sell the cards We had a great deal of fun and en- joyment out of painting and selling them and we all hope that the good the money will do will equal the fun we had. 'As we are very much interestéd in your work we hope you will tell the children we feel very sorry for them and hope their land will soon be re- stored to its normal conditions. With best wishes Sincerly Yours Amy Macintyre --- Miss Macintyre's latest story fol- lows: Drowsy Town Stores Introduction: Some adventures that came on February 2. I got this from Fiddledee, the reporter for the "Woodland News." You know that Tiddledee can go any place without being seen and this is thc story he told me: Amy Macintyre. Grandpa Goundhog sat beside the fire reading the 'Woodland News' and Jock and Jean, the twins, were busy treating nuts and Mother Groundhog was in the deepest, coziest chamber of the Groundhog home feeding the wee-hungry baby. While the others were busy Papa Groundhog had pulled on his rubbers and cap and wound his scarf round his neck and as he crept up the hall he pulled on his mittens. When he approached the hall door under the huge pine he snuggled deeper into his scarf as the cold air reached him. The sun was shining as he steeped out, but before he had gone two yards, his toes were so cold he turned to go in and caught sight of his shadow which sent him scurrying in so fast he bumped into Grandpa, who was coming up the hall. Grandpa had not expected Papa would be out so he was rather cross at not being out first, but before he could speak, Papa said, with his teeth chattering, "Don't go out, it's so cold you'll freeze". "Well, when I was young", said Grandpa as they went down the hall to get to the fire," the weather was so cold that if you put your nose out of the door this time of year that mischievous self, Jack Frost, would nip it severely." As they entered, Mamma asked", When is the Spring coming now or in six weeks?" Grandpa shook his head. "Not for six weeks yet." "Mercy me! I'll be dead by that time with those twins indoors for six weeks longer. Sakes alive! Where are they?" For while the old folks were talk- ing the twins had disappeared! Jock and Jean crawled very quietly up the hall till they came to the door. Then Jean asked, "Where are you going?" "Out," Jock confidently re- plied. Jean hesitated for just a moment then crawled after Jock. Whatever - Jock dared, Jean would do, (Editor's note-Amy is also a psychologist.) It was very cold when the twins went out so after a few minutes in the snow they scampered down the hall into the living room. When they got inside they wished they hadn't for Mother looked very stern, and said in a voice twenty times more stern. "So you've been disobeying me again." She went over to the wall where several long, terri- ble switches hung, the twins began to wimper but Mamma took the switches, and choosing two she heard the twins declare really hurt most, handed one to Papa, saying, " You attend to Jock". When the twins heard this they began to cry in earnest. "Come along with me, young lady", remarking, "you know what happens to disobedient children". She dis- appeared with the howling Jean into another room. "Then such a cat- wailing began that I didn't wait to hear any more", said Fiddledee as he finished the story. McLEISH TESTIMONIAL Subseriptions for the $200,000 audi- torium to be erected by the First Bap- tist church of Evanston as a testi- monial to Lieutenant Bruce McLeish of Glencoe, who was Killed in France, are being received in a gratifying manner by <J. Franklin O'Brien, chair- man of the church finance committee.
