Washburne Q.--Why are eighth grade girls kept at noon to wash dishes instead + of a woman being hired for this sort of work? . A.--Our course in domestic science includes four weeks of strictly prac- tical work in planning, ordering, cooking, serving and clearing up 4after the school lunches. Too many domestic science courses are purely theoretical, or train girls only to cook in small amounts. To get away from this we serve school lunches and have the girls, four or five at a time take entire charge of these. The nroblem would lose considerable of its practical value if the girls did not learn how to clear up after the meal as well as how to prepare it. In the days of our grandmothers girls were taught these things at home, but fewer and fewer girls are getting such instruction at present. Girls are more likely to have use for this sort of practical knowledge in their lives than they have for algebra or grammar. We are not substituting this work for the regular course of study, however, but giving it in ad- - dition to a thorough course in all fundamental school subjects. Among many visitors to our schools from other places there has been unanim- ous commendation of the practical- ity of our domestic science work. Q.--Can children change their electives in the middle of the term? A.--Not as a rule. Sthey will have a new choice the first of February and should finish the work they have started. Q--When is the Christmas vaca- tion? A.--It begins Thursday noon, Dec- ember 24, and lasts until Monday morning, January 3. There is only one week this year because of the fact that the school opened a week late. O--Why aren't the children getting any spelling? A.--There has been a serious and unavoidable delay in securing the individual spelling books which were needed. They are now under way, however, and should be in the chil- dren's hands within a week or so. BLACK CAT, GAS STOVE, BOILING WATER, SCALDS Little Walter Schultz Sustains In- juries when Kettle of Boiling Water Falls from Stove Walter Schultz, four year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Schultz, 425 Chestnut street, had a fateful time upon the occasion of the anniversary of his natal day Tuesday. Little Walter started out wrong by playing with the very black fam- ily cat (one should never risk that on the anniversary of one's natal day). Well, little Walter chased the black family mouser all around the house and into the kitchen where the ebony hued feline sought refuge under the gas range. Walter reached under the stove and tried so strenu- ously to retrieve the pet that he jarred loose the gas plate on the stove upon which was resting a pot of boiling water. Gas plate and kettle came down upon little Walter. He escaped with a few minor scalds about the legs. He was given first aid treatment by his mother who was working in the kitchen at the time of the accident. Little Walter is off'n black cats, he says.
