WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JANUARY 29, 1921 ns I LEGION MEMBERSHIP AT YEAR'S BEGINNING DOUBLE THAT OF 1920 ~The American Legion entered the year 1921 with twice as many mem- bers and 3,417 more posts than it had January 1, 1920, according to official records at National headquarters at dianapolis. In even greater ratio was the gain of the Women's Auxil- iary, which started the year with fifty units and 5,000 members and fin- ished with 1,695 units and a total of approximately 200,000 members. ~The unusual increase in Legion posts was characteristic of every state department and likewise in the overseas departments, where there is apparently small chance for expan- "sion. Ncw posts were formed in the following foreign countries: Argen- tine, 1; Chile, 1; China, 1; Guate- male, 1; Japan, 2; Poland, 2; Samoa, 1; Santo Domingo 1; Peru, 1. Prospects for further growth of both organizations are bright, in that membership campaigns started with the New Year in many states. The six leading Legion departments, in i regard to membership, are: New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Towa, Ohio and Minnesota. The list of Auxiliary units is headed by Mass- achusetts, followed by Minnesota, Illinois and New York. HASHIMIRA TOGO HAS DESIRE TO FIX HON. TIRES FOR MALACCA Los Angeles--Low Ah Jim, Chi- nese, lives in Malacca, Straits Set- | tlements. He knows some English and has "a business mind that is being wasted in the distant Orient. But Low reads the Los Angeles newspapers, and recently saw a story that a school to teach tire repairing had been established by the Good- year Tire & Rubber company of California. The announcement started a train cf thought in his Oriental mind that here was his great opportunity. So in English reminiscent of Hashimira Togo, Japanese schoolboy creation of Wallace Irwin, he wrote to the Pacific coast company as follows: -- "Although I could not attend your school personally, which is beyond my reach, I presume that with proper supply of volumes containing all instructions and illustrations in every detail of said work, I might just as well to gain my successful study." Which, translated by Goodyear, meant a request of a tire repair manual, which was sent to far-off Malacca. R. T. FEELEY NOW WITH C. H. BRIGGS AS AUTO SALESMAN | Roemer T.
