~ WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, A 1921 PLAN IDEAL SECTION Lael Higley to to Have Model Stretch of Road, the Best De- vised by Modern Engineers SA group of the leading highway ngineers of America, sitting in New York in a two-day conference as a technical committee of the Lincoln Highway association to decide on specifications for the Ideal section to be built en the Lincoln Highway as "an example to the world of the best type of main-traveled highway that can be constructed, have agreed on the principal specifications. The United States Rubber com- pany, which has furnished the funds for the construction of the section, has expressed the hope that a sec- tion can be built that will be the best that modern engineering can] devise and that at the same time will be in its essential details within the reach of the pocket-book of the average state or municipality. In drafting the specifications, the engineers decided that an average traffic of 15000 passenger automo- "biles per 24 hour day, traveling at a speed of 35 miles per hour, and 5,000 motor trucks, traveling at an aver- age speed of 10 miles per hour, should be provided for. - Among the recommendations made were: Width of right- of-way, 100 feet; drainage to consist of submerged drain tile and catch basins; construction to be of concrete, 10 inches thick, with re- ~ inforcing steel embedded with earth shoulders on each side of the con- crete, curves to be super-elevated for a speed of 35 miles per hour; no curves to have a radius of less than 1,000 feet; foot paths for pedestrians to be provided; all wires to be placed underground; all obstructions to the vision to be removed at intersecting roads for a distance of at least 500 feet each way; comfort stations, park sites and camp sites to be es- tablished; lighting along the section to be provided. Announcement of the selection of the spot where the "Ideal Section" wil be located will be made in a few weeks. The site will be somewhere on the Lincoln Highway between Pittsburgh and Chicago. - LONDON IS NERVOUS . OVER 'MIXED' JURIES ~ London--The jury was locked up : for two days, , during which time Ry- | pert was able to win Glady's *yes". 'This is the sort of thing we may have in this opening era of mixed juries. The probate, divorce and admiralty division introduced women as jurors ~ on January 25, and the Old Bailey made the innovation even sooner. All kinds of potentialities are con- jured up by the new order. Sepa- rated husbands and wives who chance to be brought together on ' jury duty may "make it up," or hus- bands may begin dangerous flirta- tions with fair colleagues. Romances may be begun broken in juries of the future. and Miners employed in a coal mine at Freeland, Pa., are carried to and from their work in taxicabs at their employers' expense.
