McDougal, Riverside. : daughter, Madeleine I.e Moyne son of Edward D. McDougal of A Sinclair Lewis, of "Main Street" and one of America's leading realist novelist, delighted the members of the Book and Play club on Monday evening of this week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Younker on Sheridan road, with a whimsical talk on American literature and .a face- _ tious but none the less spirited de- fense of the realistic novel. Mr. Lewis is an engaging person- ality and he won his audience from the start by a frank admission that as an author his appearance must shock his audience as most orthodox and disappointing. "The motto of the real author is 'Beauty is holy', just as anyone can find in a Greek temple or a perfect painting so anyone can create beau- ty by conjuring up an ideal set of circumstances. I hold it to be a great achievement to seek and find the beauty in little things, little people, little lives--to take life as we find it and portray it as it appears to us. "This I have tried to do in 'Main Street'. Tt is a picture of my Main Street, of Winnetka's Main Street, of all the little Main streets the world over. I want to recreate for you the people I know and have {earned to love, so that when you read it you will say, "Why I know that man. That's John Jones, our butcher," etc. "Tn the realistic novel you are con- stantly meeting new people--many times people you would not care to live with, it is true--but still veritable pictures of veritable persons. You are getting a mental impress of the many stratas of human life. You get "to learn the inward beauty of com- mon things. Beauty, lucidity and 'honesty are the three standards of good realistic literature." : ie Mrs. Carl Latham of Evanston is president of the Arden Shore asso- ciation, which will hold its annual "inspection tea" at the winter camp at Lake Bluff today at 3 o'clock. : This camp, which in summer is open to mothers and children from Chicago tenements, in winter is the home of undernourished boys sent out of the Chicago Board of Edu- cation to be built up so they may qualify for working certificates.
