WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 21, 1921 9 REALTORS LAY PLANS -- --- HINTS FOR THE GARDEN Photographs of the cemeteries in France where their sons lie buried will be supplied to gold star parents of Lynchburg, Va., by the American "Sages tell us that the best way to get the most out of life is to fall in love with a great problem or a beautiful woman." Why not choose Housing conditions are as perplex- ing in West Seattle, Wash., as in the rest of the country. Hence the local post of the American Legion has Edited by David H. Stevenson, Director National Home Gardeners' Association GREEN ONIONS Everybody likes to eat the first new little green onions of spring. These are among the first vegetables that any home gardner can raise. In or- der to have these onions at the carl- iest date plant onion sets which are sold at seed stores in three varieties: white, red and yellow. Many prefer the white variety as they are milder to the taste. These onion sets vary in size from three quarters of an inch to the size of a pea. Those the size of a pea are just as good and will grow just as large an onion as the larger ones. A 20-foot row planted every two weeks. will- supply an abun- dance of green onions for all purposes until onions grown from seed mature. Plant the sets as soon as the ground can be dug in the spring. Frost cannot hurt them. They will grow in any garden loam. Plant the sets in rows 12 inches apart and the cets 3 inches apart in the row. Push each one down into the ground 2 or 3 inches and com- pletely cover with soil. You may ex- pect green onions ready to eat in 3 to 4 weeks after planting. NORTHERN LIGHTS GOOD TO LOOK AT, DISTURB WIRES One of the most strikingly beautiful displays of the Aurora Borealis of Northern lights was seen in the vil- lage Saturday night. The play of the flashes of light brought many resi- dents from their homes and "rubber- neck" parties were held on many a street corner as the rainbow-hued streamers of light blazed and flick- ered across the heavens. According to reports coming in from all parts of the country, hom- ever, this electrical display caused much damage to the telegraph, and power lines. Telegraph communication with many parts of the country was com- pletely cut off for several hours and currents were so strong that telegraph instru- ments. were burned out. The aurora borealis is prevalent at this time of the year. | $5 for Your Vote HARRY MITCHELL |X Customers Before May 24th YOUR een will allow you FIVE DOLLARS for it, off these prices.
