Houren, Chief of the Fire department wishes to call the atten- tion of persons planning to install oil burning furnaces, to the regulations of the Board of Underwriters cover- ing the storage of oil fuel for house heating. The following letter has been received from the Board of Un- derwriters : Chicago, November 29, 1920. Mr. G. M. Houren, Chief of Fire Department. Winnetka, Illinois. Dear Sir: In reply to your inquiry concern- ing oil burning equipments for heating dwellings, permit me to reply as follows: The rules of this Board permit an inside tank, not exceeding 60 gallons, connected to the burner and feeding oil by gravity. In ad- dition there may be stored inside not to exceed 240 gallons of fuel oils distillate or kerosene. Tanks installed outside of build- ings ought to be buried in the ground as a precaution against the pranks of children, if for no other reason, but we do not insist that they be buried unless the ca- pacity exceeds the amount permit- OF OIL STORAGE ed in side of a building, i. e.,, 300 gallons. No tank, whether inside or out- side, having a capacity in excess of 60 gallons, is permitted to be connected so that there is a possi- ble chance of its contents being discharged *o the burner. This is to be construed to mean that be- tween the storage tank and the gravity tank supplying the burn- er there must be an approved hand operated piston type oil pump. Piping inside the building must not exceed 34 inch diameter. Trusting that this information may be helpful to you, I am Very truly, (Signed) W. D. INSTALL NEW SAFETY ISLAND A new type of safety island was installed on trial by the Public Works and Electric Department last week at the intersection of Lincoln avenue and Elm street. This island consists of an electrical- ly illuminated hemisphere placed in the center of the pavement. to di- rect traffic without unnecessarily blocking the street, which is not wide enough at this particular location to permit of the installation of the usu- al type of safety island. The City of Milwaukee has adopt- ed this type for use at all important street intersections and, after several months' trial, it has proven very sat- isfactory. One advantage is that traf- fic is directed without danger of col- lision, a vehicle passing safely over the island without damage, in case it is accidently struck.
