Winnetka has not done so, and one cannot but believe that the om- mission here is due rather to over- sight than indifference toward the Winnetka Post of the American Le- gion which claims as its. members most of the young men of the village --one of the strongest posts, the size of the community considered, in all these United States. It is embarrassing for Winnetka's legion post, upon occasions similar to the Marshal Foch reception, to ap- pear in public minus "colors" when practically all other legion posts are flying Post Colors presented by pub- lic spirited citizens. It is time that Winnetka does the just and reasonable thing by its own American Legion Post. If you, as a citizen of the commun- ity, are interested, communigate either with the Winnetka Talk or with Harold W. Snell, commander of the Winnetka Post of the American Reunion of Former Fort Sheridan Yanks Those Who Were at Fort When It was an Army Hospital Invited to Reunion at Mason Home During the days following the close of the world struggle in Europe, and even before the close of that affair, Fort Sheridan became officially known as U. S. General Hospital No. 28. Thousands of men were sent there badly wounded and gassed as a result of their overseas service. Those were dark, dreary days at the old fort, with the rows upon rows of cots filled with white-faced suffering boys. But the old saying goes that every cloud has its silver lining; and the silver lining for the wounded men at the fort was the tea room which Mrs. Mason, of Every afternoon from 3 to 5 tea and ntertainment was dispensed through the kindly efforts of Mrs. Mason. To this tea room came the boys who could walk at least on crutches. Those who could not were wheeled down by nurses, doc- tors, reconstruction aides and various welfare workers. During this hour all lines were forgotten and a captain might become a buck private's "buddy." The old fort has long since ceased to be an army hospital. But in the minds of the men the memories of it still exist Legion. Now read on: 'Winnetkans will, no doubt, be in- terested in and proud of the fact that their community was represented in the Foch reception in Chicago and Illinois last Saturday by the Winnet- ka Post of the American Legion. In so far as the local post was con- cerned, the ceremonies of the day were three in number; morning, afternoon and evening. In the morn- ing the Post, with other posts of Chicago and vicinity, lined the east side of Michigan boulevard and rend- ! ered the customary military courtesies to the Marshal as he passed in parade with his military escort. The after- noon ceremonies took place at Lin- coln's monument in Lincoln Park, where the Marshal laid a wreath at the base of the monument. At both of these ceremonies flags of the dif- ferent posts were grouped and made an impressive display. The local post was somewhat embarrassed by the fact that they possessed neither Na- tional nor Post colors and hope that ere another ceremony of this kind arises the present financial stringency may have passed and that they will have, by that time, secured a stand of colors. The evening ceremony was public: in nature and held at the Au- ditorium.
