WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1921 13 Bring Back Yule Spirit of Oud, Jensen Pleads A plea for a revival of the finer and nobler things that provide the real motive of the the Yuletide is voiced this week by Jens Jensen, president of the North Shore MacDowell socie- ty, in a letter to members of the or- ganization. "I like to see our festivals--and few they are--more festive, more inti- mate, closer woven into the human fabric," writes Mr. Jensen. "I still live in the sweet memories of my boyhood days, memories of Yule, Easter and Whitsuntide and they are worth more to me to-day than gold. "Yule--I like that word, it smells of great age and has a fine poetic ring to it--is soon with us again. Of late years it has become a shopping feast. and for the many just a com- mercial transaction. All its beauty and its poetry gone. "Its great message, be it christian or pagan, forgotten. Can we not bring back some of its former beauty? "Where are the Christmas carols and the groups that sang them? We need this sort of play in our lives. We need to revive the finer and no- bler things that make Yule festive and put it on a higher spiritual plane. It will give a different mean- ing to our Christmas celebrations and bring added pleasure into our lives. "I also want to make a plea for placing candles in our windows there- by putting our North Shore villages in a real festive mood. The North Shore MacDowell so- ciety, a branch of the Edward Mac- Dowell association and devoted to the perpetuation of the ideals of the late Edward MacDowell, America's fore- most composer, is interested solely in tempering the commercial and ma- terialistic character of the age with a revival in the communities and homes of a thorough appreciation of the Arts -- music, art and literature. The national headquarters are loca- ted at Peterborough, New Hampshire, the former home of Edward Mac- Dowell. Officers of the North Shore society, with Mr. Jensen, are: First Vive President, Mrs. M. W. Harwood-Arrowood, Wilmette. Second Vice President, Dean, Winnetka. Recording secretary, Rollin Pease, Evanston. Corresponding secretary, J. Keeney McDowell, Chicago. Treasurer, Mrs. F. W.
