Prof. M. B. Hillegas, formerly state commissioner of education for Ver- mont but now director of the demon- stration school at Teachers College of Columbia Unversity, spent two days studying the Winnetka system in October aand returned again this week. "The Teachers College," Prof. Hil- legas said, "is profoundly impressed with the work being done in Winnetka. We are giving the Winnetka schools the sincerest flattery by imitating the methods and using some of the materials. Prof. Thorndike has said that the arithmetic materials from Winnetka are more suggestive than any he has found in the country." Prof. Hillegas has asked Superin- tendent Washburne to give a series of talks to the Teachers College and demonstration schools at Columbia university next March or April. He has also arranged with Miss Marian Carswell, principal of the Hubbard Woods school to conduct a demon- stration in work with the 5th grade. Miss Carswell is to use Winnetka methods and materials exclusivelyand to have entire freedom to carry on her work as it would be carried on in Winnetka. NEW WILLOW STREET HCME E. D. Monday afternoon an appreciative audience listened to Miss Myra Reynolds' last lecture in the series on "The Theater in the 18th Century". Miss Reynolds' sub- ject for the afternoon was "The Beg- gar's Opera". She told how the opera came to be written almost in a jest and of the success which at- tended its production. For one hun- dred years it was played in London every year with the exception of twelve years. Scenes from the opera were shown on the screen and Miss Kathryn Greene charmed the audience | with a number of songs selected from this popular production. The regular meeting of the club was held at the clubhouse on Thurs- day afternoon. In the absence of the president, Mrs. George W. Gordon, the meeting was called to order by Mrs. Willoughby Walling, vice-pres- ident. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. It was an- nounced that on Thursday, December 29, the program to be given by the Art and Literature committee, would include music and readings, appro- priate to the season. The children of Horace Mann school will have a toy and candy sale today. They are also asking for books. The proceeds are to go to Dr. Alice Barlow-Brown for her work on a Serbian hospital. On Saturday, December 31, the Music committee will give a special performance for the benefit of the piano fund, which includes a fairy tale in movies. Children are especially in- vited. : Mrs. Wortley announced that the Drama club of Winnetka will give two performances this week end. On Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, there will be a performance of "Why the Chimes Rang" for the boys and girls in the gym at Community House, and on Sunday evening, at 8 o'clock, a double bill, including "Why the Chimes Rang" and "The Dust of the Road" will be presented for adults. There will be no admission fee. The club is offering this to the community to help foster a real Christmas spirit. On Christmas Eve, December 24, the Christmas carols will be sung on the Village Green. Mrs. Foster introduced the speaker of the afternoon, Mrs. Maywood Simons of Evanston, state chairman of the League of Women Voters, who gave an inspiring talk. She was fol- lowed by Mrs. Frederick Bagley, vice-president of the League of Women Voters in Massachusetts.
