TTT YY rN. HHT ITT TTT WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JULY 15, 1922 fa ---------------------------------------------------------------- A -- TENNIS TOPICS by Mercer Beasley At the Woodstock Tennis club, In- dianapolis, they have filed away the records of the National Clay Court championship for this year. Under the letter "T" you would find that William T. Tilden, II, of Phila- delphia, Pa., won the Men's Singles Title and that his opponent was Senzo Shimidzu; the scores of their match were 7-5, 6-3, 6-1. Next comes the Men's Doubles. It is recorded that Burdick, and Bastian defeated Hennessy and Westbrook by the scores of 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4. Geo. Lott's name is written down under the title of Winner of Junior Singles and, last but not least, comes Donnie Strachan who goes down in the book as having won the Boys' Singles Title. I like to say that this is another tribute to Tilden's teach- ings as Donnie trys hard to live up to the right way of playing and, even if Tilden does have to scold him once in a while, Donnie has done wonder- fully well both at Skokie and at In- dianapolis. The bad news flashed to this coun- try last Saturday night caused no end of a ripple in our calm and peaceful tennis world; Molla had been beaten. For one, I couldn't believe it and, vet, when the account of the match had been closely gone over I found that Molla had been outclassed. Worse and more of it. I am game enough to say I was all wrong on my dope and that inasmuch as I had seen the two girls play at Forest Hills last year, I thought I had sized up Molla's super- iority over Suzanne, but I hadn't that's all. The match was a dull one, neither girl differing in the style of game. Both played in the back court and sought to earn points by placing the ball first in one corner in the back court and then the other. This was Molla's winning style of game at Forest Hills and Suzanne's rat Wimbledon last Saturday. Suzzanne it was who dominated the play, and when you hear that the match took only 35 minutes to be played, you can see how really easy it was. There is one thing that has not been made clear. Why Molla and Suzanne were kept waiting until 7 p. m. before they were put on the courts. Shad- ows had begun to creep across the court, the light was tricky, and the girls had been waiting for ever so long for the Semi-finals to get through. Furthermore, at Wimbledon there was gathered the largest gallery that ever attended a tennis match. Fourteen thousand people were there and 5,000 more were turned away, so the strain must have been extremely hard on them. Fair for one, as for the other, of course, but then, maybe, Molla felt it worse. She can play better tennis, in fact, against Mrs. Beamish in the Semi-finals she had everything, speed, pace, direction, and was lightning fast on her feet. Looking closely at the point score I find Molla netted continually, she lit- erally gave away the points on netted balls, even on return of service she netted the ball, and Suzanne has not a service that Molla has to net. The score was 6-2, 6-0. Mrs. Massey's ability to handle Mr. Hancock's severe service was one of the features of the match, and then during the last set it was Miss Klotz who turned her net work to great advantage, for .-1I re- member scoring 4 points for her on balls that she took from the volley position and neatly cross-courted them for undisputed points. Miss Klotz should soon develop into the top- most class of tennis players and 1 doubt if there is a girl player in Chi- 'cago who can hit the ball as hard or who has such a variety of strokes. Miss Klotz needs tournament experi- ence and if she will get this she will go far up the tennis ladder. Goodrich Tires Size or price cannot modify the one- quality Goodrich standard.
