T26-1tc PRES LAKES T GULF WATERWAY LIN Evanston Man on Commis- sion of Investigation Possibilities of the proposed Great Lakes-St. Lawrence deep sea water- way as regards benefits to the middle west, as well as strenuous refutations of the criticisms made against the investigations of engineers who favor the project, are set forth in the official report cf the Illinois Deep Waterway commission, of which M. K. Northam, 1043 Forest ave. is vice chairman. The report is made to Gov. Len" Small under date of July 28. The report summarizes the work of the Deep Waterway commission which was authorized by the General As- sembly June 28, 1921, and organized on April 28, 1922, at a meeting at the Mid-Day of Chicago. William Nelson Pelouze was elected chairman, M. K. Northam vice chairman and L. M. Nicolson was chosen secretary. After giving brief digests of re- marks made by Governors Henry J. Allen of Kansas and Nathan L. Miller of New York at a debate in Chicago over the proposed waterway on May 23, 1922, the report deals with the practical nature of the project and its benefits to the nation. "The work to be accomplished in order to provide the deep waterway to connect the Great Lakes with the Atlantic ocean actually covers only 33 miles of canal with seven locks, lying between Lake Ontario and the Ocean," states the report. "The greatness of the scheme as a whole lies in its importance to the entire middle west, embracing as it does more than a third of the area, population and wealth of our country, all of which will be benefited tre- mendously by improved and cheap- ened transportations," concluded the report in urging the citizens of Illi- ESTABLISHED 1854 C.H.
