ye WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1922 13 MENS FISHING WL TIGHTEN UP Lax System of Dress Must Go, Is Decree London--Fashion experts have de- cided that there must be a general "tightening-up" in men's fashions this Fall, and the "dress as you please" habit of Englishmen today must be stopped for good and all. Formality of the 1914 type is to come with unerring severity, especial- ly as regards evening clothes. Opera hats must be worn, and the slack substitution of other hats will not be tolerated. Soft-fronted evening shirts will only be worn at informal gatherings in pri- vate houses, and a visit to the thea- ter with a mixed party will entail full evening dress for the men. The single knot evening tie is ex- pected to have a greater vogue than ever. Taffeta will enjoy a great vogue for shirts and pajamas. A new cin- namon brown is to be introduced into the striped variety of shirts. Aerial blue will be the last word for fashionable socks, while the check tie, after a popularity lasting three years, will disappear. Tut Jackson and Managers Are Suspended by New York New York--Earl R. Palmer and William McCarney, joint managers of Tut Jackson, and Jackson himself were suspended pending investigation by the state athletic commission as to the alleged giving out of false in- formation regarding Jackson before Wills at Ebbets field a week ago. the Ohio boxer's bout with Harry capturing the title. One horse, General Custer's Com- manche, was the only survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn, was never ridden afterward and for nearly 20 years drew a U. S. army pension. Ten thousand passengers sailed in one day this summer on 14 transatlan- tic liners from New York for Europe, and it is estimated they spent a total of about $15,000,000 on their trips. German theater goers are more in- tevested today in the plays of Shakespeare, Shaw and Wilde than in the production of German drama- tists, says the Manchester Guardain. Doesn't Like Tomatoes; Formerly "Love Apples" Pomeroy, Ohio.--Years ago Sheffield Russell, eighty-two, tasted a "love apple"'--as tomatoes then were called. He did not like its odor. Since that day Russell has never tasted a tomato, although it has developed from the size of a hickorynut to an object weighing several pounds. SIAN QUT 0D SIESTE HBT Industrialism Imperils Cen- tury-Old Practice Savannah, Ga.--To "siesta" or not to "siesta?" That is the question---as Hamlet soliloquized about something else. For this is no gloomy meditation. : It is a live question to Savannah, whether it shall shake off the cus- toms of two hundred years of closing down tight every afternoon from two to four while all citizens indulge in slumber and lunch or scramble about for something to eat in a quick lunch room during a half-hour period. Efforts to relegate the custom of mid-day siestas to the discard have failed in the past. Periodically the question is debated and as often the old custom is clung to. Now comes Mayor Stewart with the assertion that the old practice is "ob- solete," and calling on tthe heads of civic clubs and banks to join with him in inaugurating a half-hour lunch period with a subsequent earlier knocking 'off in the afternoon. The Board of Trade directors have endorsed the Mayor's proposal. Others have not acted on it. Daughters of American Revolution Founder Ill Plymouth, Mass.--Mrs. Mary 8S. Lockwood, 94, founder of the Daugh- ters of the American Revolution, is seriously ill at the Jordan hospital here. Hospital authorities refuse to discuss Mrs. Lockwood's condition. It is feared her advanced age may hin- der her recovery. WESTERN UNDERTAKING CO.
