WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 1922 Book Reviews By John Philip Morris Katherine Mayo is the Pollyanna of the Pennsylvania mounted police. MOUNTED JUSTICE, her third glad book, deals like the early two with the exploits and deeds of daring of this really fine body. Miss Mayo writes under the spell of the demi-urge and finds romance in a charge sheet and bliss in a baton. MOUNTED JUSTICE is a fascinat- ing collection to the lovers of the heroic and the mysterious. I never doubt a fellow author's word --except in regard to the number of copies sold of his books--and I, there- fore, accept absolutely this author's statement that these tales are the ab- solute truth. As detective stories they are honest- ly more interesting than those of that famous but passe dope fiend and as tales of moviesque fights they are thrillers. They cover the whole range of police activity from kidnap- ing to the putting down of mobs. They picture the P. M. P. as a body of men combining all the worthwhile qualities of Holmes, Galahad, Samson and Ghandi, and Miss Mayo shows clearly how taking their oath of of- fice changes a man into a demigod. However, there is one of their ac- tivities that Miss Mayo has over- looked. To them, orders are orders and a mob's a mob. In one story Miss Mayo tells how they took, justly. I mean legally, of course, the possession of a church away from the ignorant, foolish, foreign folk who had built it out of their gold and blood and sweat and who resented the unknown law that gave it and its power to their unknown bishop. By dwelling on the gentleness and bravery of the police in the fight against heavy odds Miss Mayo enlists our sympathy in the po- lice and makes the mob defeat a just victory. This is the only one of the stories that deals with mobs and nowhere in the book is there any paean based on the short and ugly words, coal and steel. And yet though the author may not know it, not the least of the activities of her heroic riders are their daring deeds against starving strikers. If, after MOUNTED POLICE we read the writings of Mr. Z. Foster we will find these same splendid sherlocks riding over and terrorizing those whose only crimes are that they are foregners and strikers. It is the glory of the force that they obey orders whether or not they lead to the mouth 3 the fall i the people, and you will have a feu- an dalistic body of men, loyal, brave and Because of the strike, or some other of hell or to a vacant lot where are gathered together a few protestants. This is their glory and their duty and the shame, if there be any shame, must fall elsewhere. Nor is it far to seek. BY A. J.
