WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, APRIL 7, 1923 11 IARM.1LEG, EXPERT TANKER Crippled Girl Overcomes Her Handicap Probably the most unique system used in this country in teaching the art of swimming, was practised by Tom Robinson, swimming coach at Northwestern university, in instruct- ing Mary M. Gindick, the famous one- armed and one-legged freshman at Northwestern. Robinson made several attempts to lure Miss Gindick into the pool, but in vain. In the meantime Coach Tom decided to try a number of experi- ments He reasoned that if he could make any progress by swimming with one arm and one leg, it should be pos- sible for any other intelligent person to do the same. So he began. It wasn't nearly so hard as he imagined. In a few minutes he could crawl along smoothly in the water by manipulat- ing only one arm and one leg. He did this for several days, making progress each time. After satisfying himself that swim- ming under handicap was no impos- sibility he informed Miss Gindick of his experiments: She now consented to watch him perform. And after seeing him perform, she was deter- mined not to be outdone by mere man. Togged out in her bathing suit she entered the tank one morning ready for practice. Robinson was confident of her ability to learn. After the third lesson she could crawl very well, and now, after several months of training there is hardly any feat she cannot perform in the water. Mrs. B. F. Langworthy will be the principal speaker at the reunion luncheon for former Camp Osoha girls, their parents and new campers, at the North Shore hotel today. Her daughter, Miss Marigold Langworthy, attended the camp last season. Light Week in Building Permits, Records Show The building boom quieted down last week. In the past seven days only four permits were granted by Wirnetka village authorities. The permits represent a total investment of $28,200. One permit issued to Dr. Harry Jackson authorized the building of a $14,000 frame and stucco residence at 1294 Asbury avenue. Two permits for $7,000 residences were given to Charles and Frank Kristof. The former will build at 1108 Cherry street, and the latter at 1111 Cherry street. Charles Kristof also received a permit to build a private garage at 1108 Cherry street. Dartmouth men of Chicago and the north shore gathered at the Chicago Uni- versity club Thursday for luncheon to greet the lads from Hanover who pre- sented their annual musical show at the Aryan Grotto that evening. "The Sahara Derby", said to be among the best of the big eastern college produc- tions of the season, includes in its cast Gilbert Robinson, Harold Hamilton Gib- son and IL. E. MacDonald of Evanston, mdmbers of the freshman class.
