Knopf each $2.00 Reviewed by Vincent Starrett Superlatives only may be used in re- viewing the books of Arthur Machen. He is unique in the best usage of that abused word. His great novel, "The Hill of Dreams," is one of the master- pieces of literature, and many of his other works closely approach it. Now, in two delightful volumes. Mr. Knopf has given to America Mr. Machen's autobiography, and the many who . have wished to know more of the man behind the books may now read and wonder. They will wonder, as have earlier admirers, why only now, after thirty-five years, this extra- ordinary fantaisiste and stylist extra- ordinary is receiving the applause he deserves. But it is all in the tradition. The insectial fame of the popular novelist is born at dawn and dies at sunset; the fame of the authentic master too often is born at sunset, but it is immortal. When I said some- thing to this effect ten years ago, I was laughed at as an adoring hero- worshipper; to day my voice is lost in the eulogies of others. Wherefore, 1 am glad. There is a marked difference be- tween "Far Off Things" and its se- quel, "Things Near and Far." "You will be disappointed in 'Things Near and Far'" Mr. Machen wrote me, recently. "There has never been a satisfactory sequel." But I am not disappointed; nor will other readers be disappointed. The one is incom- plete without the other. In "Far Off Things" there is the greater beauty of phrase and charm of style; it was written in 1915, when Mr. Machen was somewhat younger and in better health than at present; but in "Things Near and Far" there is concealed the deeper tragedy for those who read understandingly, and there is more of actual autobiography, of the things one wishes to know. Together, the two volumes form an autobiography the like of which before h#s not existed. Arthur Machen has written some amazing and tragic tales, but he has written nothing more dramatic than his own "tale of terror," the story of crucifixion of Arthur Machen, dream- er and mystic, in an age into which he should never have been born. And reading these books one knows that all of importance which Arthur Machen has written, whether of fic- tion or fact, has been autobiography. Appleton & Co. $2.00 That the lure of the sea may reign supreme in spite of its dangers and the unnaturalness of life aboard ship, is clearly brought out in "The Ground Swell." A mysterious cargo, a drunk- en captain, three mates of great con- trasting personality, the chief en- gineer, a mutinous crew clearly live in its pages and the breath of salt air and the rhythm of waves are in them all. Even those who know nothing of the sea will enjoy this young writer's story, which is a definite addition to the list of well told novels of the water. Of the characters, the third mate and Bronsen, the chief engineer, hold one's chief attention, with the second mate and Peters of the crew almost as interesting; and in Greggs, Lee and the others too are vividly shown the shaping of men's lives by .their contact with the open ocean.
