tm ee ee WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JANUARY 19, 1924 "RED ROBE" IS GUILD OFFERING Drama of the French Judici- ary to be Given by North Shore Theatre Guild DISTINGUISHED CAST Perry Dunlap Smith and Mrs. Cates have Leads A carefully selected cast from the North Shore Theatre Guild players is now in rehearsal on "The Red Robe" an Eugene Brieux production, which is to be staged in the various north shore communities during the week of Jan- unary 25. The story is built around the aspira- tions of two lawyers 'who are ambitious to achieve the Red Robe, the highest honor accorded a man in the judicial system of France. It reeks with in- trigue and permits Monsieur Brieux, who, -incidently, is the author. of "Dam- aged Goods," full sway to employ "every weapon in his armory of satire." Flays Legal Methods A crime has been committed--one of several in the investigation of which the authorities have displayed utter stupid- ity--and the public is crying for action, for a conviction--having had numerous questionable acquittals. Unable to un- cover the actual criminal, the law, rep- resented in Mouzon, the magistrate, falls upon an innocent peasant victim. Vagret, a lawyer ot great ability, but conscientious and 'too honest to suc- ceed," is elected to prosecute the in- dicted man. It is his great chance and he is making the most of it until he suddenly becomes aware that the de- fendant is absolutely innocent, when he directs attention toward securing an ac- quittal, thus sacrificing his one supreme "Neighbors and "Your fountain-pen, if you have any, is it a real good We have a big hand- ful of splendid writers and also a lightweight, one? assortment of but durable, magazine pencils." nice Smiling Service Community Pharmacy CHAS. Mouzon, on the contrary, has employ- ed every means available to secure a conviction, even to the extent of drag- ging the name of the defendant's wife into the mire. Mouzon, because of his energy in prosecuting the case, eventu- ally wins the Red Robe but loses his life at the hands of the disgraced wom- an. Vagret wins nothing more nor less than the moral satisfaction of having been just and principled. "The Red Robe" is dramatic, a daring expose of French legal intrigue and a satire that should prove of unusual in- terest to north shore theatergoers. The cast of characters is headed by Perry Dunlap Smith, of Winnetka, who has the part of Mouzon, the prosecuting magistrate; Mrs. Dudley Cates, of Winnetka, who plays Yanetta, wife of the victimized peasant; and Abram Mendenhall, of Evanston, who portrays Vagret, the conscientious prosecuting lawyer. Mr. Smith has been seen in previous Theatre Guild productions, including "Twelve Hundred" and "Dear Brutus." Mrs. Cates, will be remembered for her remarkable portrayal of the title role in "Jeanne d'Arc." Mr. Mendenhall is an actor, playwright and director of wide experience, Excellent Support Others in the cast are Samuel C. GIRLS ARE TOLD OF THE Y. W. C. A. FOYER The Upper school girls of the North Shore Country Day school heard an interesting talk Wednesday of this week by Miss Paulina Sage of the Y. W. C. A. Foyer located near the University of Chicago. Miss Sage, with many illustrative details, explained the work of the Foy- er as a club for foreign students of the university, where Japanese, Chin- ese, Russians, Mexicans and repre- sentatives of many other nations are mutually benefitted by a thorough un- derstanding of each other's good quali- ties, secured through the medium of the establishment of true friendships. The club, she said, provides sleeping rooms where foreign girl students may remain until they secure permanent and satisfactory quarters, but its most important mission is to bring these girls in contact with the best that American culture and the broadening influence of college social life can pro- vide. Miss Sage described an average day at the Foyer, one that to the north shore girls seemed filled with unusual experiences. She also read several letters of appreciation penned by girls who had been helped by the Foyer. Firemen Summoned When Automobile Takes Fire McClain Reinhart, 352 Ridge avenue, was having his balky car towed in the general direction of his home Wed- nesday night of this week when the indisposed machine suddenly backfired and shot into flames. Chief Houren's men arrived in time to prevent serious damage to the car. THE R. I. Norris, Vice-Pres. H.
