WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JANUARY 26, 1924 BLUE BOOK IS OFF THE PRESS Publication Delayed by Fire at Springfield A copy of the 1923-1924 Illinois State Blue Book has just been re- ceived from Secretary of State, Louis I. Emmerson, who publishers the book biennially. It is intended for reference purposes and its nine hun- dred and thirty-nine pages are crowd- ed with facts about the State of Illi- nois. Owing to a fire in the bindery of the plant where the book is being bound, delivery in quantities has been delayed until some additional forms can be run. The book received by this paper is one of the few which escaped the fire. The present edition follows the general style adopted in the 1921-1922 edition but is more elaborate both as to subject matter and illustrations. Among the new features which have been added in the present volume may be mentioned particularly the follow- ing: Many Facts A table giving the names of the mayors and city clerks, the popula- tion, altitude above the sea level and form of government of every incor- porated city, town and village in the State. A gazetteer of all the rivers and other streams in the State, showing their length, the county in which they rise and the stream into which they empty. A table giving basic facts relative to drainage and land reclamation areas in the State. United States census reports on manufacturing and other industries in the State. A comprehensive article by the Superintendent of Highways on the proposed $100,000,000 road bond issue, together with a list and description of thé routes in the proposed system and a map showing the principai cities covered by the system. An explanation of the New State fish and game code, together with a map showing the three game zones established by the game code. The text of the proposed new con- stitution which was defeated by the people in December, 1922, and the Ad- dress of the Constitutional Conven- tion of the People. Interesting Illustrations Among the illustrations of the pres- ent volume in addition to the usual portraits of the State officials and members of thedegislature are: a fron- tispiece showing the landscaping of the State Capitol Grounds with the new Centennial Building in the back- ground, several views of the exterior and interior of the Centennial Build- ing, views of beauty spots in Illinois which have been selected as suitable for State parks, scenes in State in- stitutions and State normal schools, a birdseye view of the University of Illinois, pictures of the new statues of former Governor Richard Yates, John M. Palmer, and several others. The book is elaborately indexed. In addition to the name index covering all of the thousands of names appear- ing in the book, there is a subject in- dex and an index to former Blue Books. In the forepart of the book is a comprehensive article giving facts re- lative to the State in as brief a com- pass as possible. JOINS MAYNARD FORCES Lewis T. Dodds, who has been in charge of the Chicago offices of the Arthur P. Hubbell company for the past two years, has formed connections with E. P. Maynard and company, Hub- bard Woods realtors. He will have charge of the Hubbard Woods office. This Scout Hike Bears Touch of Genuine Winter Skating for miles along the Fox river, fighting a snow and ice blizzard and taking pictures from the top of a ski jump two hundred feet high were the sports enjoyed by a party of five Boy Scouts of Kenilworth Troop One last week-end. "The boys were: Carl Carlson, George .Kriety Frank Watt, Dean Vail, Bob Sweet, and Bob Townley, the scoutmaster. The boys made their headquarters at the home of Carl Carlson near the Fox river grove thirty miles northwest of Chicago. Another hike to Fox river is plan- ned for Washington's birthday when a bigger party is expected to attend. If the weather permits, tobogganing and skiing will be sport features of this trip. In the meantime the finish of the patrol contest will furnish plenty of activity for the Scouts. At the last meeting this month the points will be added and the prizes awarded. The winning patrol will receive the first leg on a silver cup and the five high- est point makers medals given by the troop committee. At present the Telephone 1098 ALEC W. Last year 584 safety lectures were given before 22,548 school children. Carrying the message of accident prevention to children and the public generally is an important part of this company's Safety Service program. [t is an interesting fact that 707 safety precautions, suggested by employees of the company, were made effective on the North Shore Line last year. Another interesting Scout "event comes at the first meeting in Febru- ary when parents of the boys will he invited. to an informal rally to see what the troop is accomplishing. The hoys will stage an exhibition of scout work and serve light refreshments luring the evening. Teacher Injured in Fall Is Home from Hospital Miss Alice Wesley, superintendent of Joseph Sears school at Kenilworth, returned to her home last week from St. Francis hospital where she has been confined because of injuries suf- fered in a fall three weeks ago. Her broken arm and dislocated shoulder are mending nicely and she will soon be back at her school work, it is ex- pected. Since returning to her home Miss Wesley has directed the affairs of the school in part through teachers meet- ings, but Miss Louise Robinson, act- ing superintendent, is still shouldering a share of the responsibility.
