"I deeply appreciate the high honor that 'has been conferred upon me by the people of Illinois and the con- fidence they have placed in me. It is my earnest desire to serve all the people to the very best of my ability. I feel that my work has only just be- gun, as the first session of Congress during my term of office commenced on December 23, 1923. In all fairness I think I may ask to be continued in office in order that I may be given a reasonable opportunity to make good.
