" FIREMEN WIN LOFTY PRAISE Work on Bouscaren Home Brings Two Letters and Fund Contribution HOUREN IS LAUDED "Did Wonders Under Dan- gerous Conditions" In appreciation of the splendid work of the Winnetka Fire department at the Bouscaren fire last week both Mr. Bouscaren and Mr. Ralph S. Hobart, who lives in the house next door to the Bouscaren residence and who turned in the call, have written letters of commendation to Chief G. M. Houren. The letter from Mr. Bouscaren was supplemented by a generous contribu- tion to the firemen's benefit fund. It reads as follows: Dear Chief: I want to express my apprecia- tion of the splendid work your men did under your supervision and leadership in handling the fire at my house last Thursday morning. You performed wonders under con- ditions. which made your task both difficult and dangerous. L. H. G. Bouscaren. Say It With Cigars A box of fine cigars accompanied Mr. Hobart's letter, which read as follows : Mr. G. M. Houren, Fire Marshall, Winnetka, Illinois. Dear Sir: I want to express my apprecia- tion of the prompt way in which you and your associates in the Win- netka Fire department responded to a call sent in when fire was discov- ered in the home of my neighbor, Mr. Bouscaren, at 1:30 A. M. Thurs- day morning. You and your men were on the job in a surprisingly short time and, despite the intense cold, did splendid work during the four hours you were at the fight. In passing around the hot coffee, I am afraid I missed two or three of your men who were on the lad- ders or on the roof. I am sending you by parcel post a box of cigars which please pass to your splendid fire fighters with my regards. # 7 Yours Sincerely, Ralph H. Hobart. The Seventeen club, comprising Winnetka and Glencoe young people, will give a dance at Winnetka Mason- ic temple Saturday evening, February 2. The Vagabond dance orchestra will provide the music. Basket Ball Enlists Interest of Schools With leagues organized according to weights for both boys and girls, the basketball season is getting underway in the Winnetka schools this week. Supervising games in the Hibbard gymnasium and the Community House, every day, choosing teams and keep- ing scores, Harry Clarke, physical director, is an extremely busy man. In the two girls' leagues there are 75 players divided into light and heavy weight classes. Approximately 60 boys are out in the boys' leagues which are divided into three classes: light, medium and heavy weight. "It is our purpose to put every boy and girl on a team," says Mr. Clarke. "For the present we will play among ourselves and decide the winners in each class. Later we hope to arrange a series for the boys' teams with Country Day schools." Kiddies Go Asleighing; School Ma'ams the Same When the classes at Skokie school, Winnetka, hired a sleigh for a ride the morning after the first snow a week ago Wednesday they started something. The idea was contagious and within the next few days all the other schools followed suit. In fact, even the teachers in Mr. Washburne's seminar could not resist the temptation to "skip" work and hire the sleigh themselves one evening. As "What a terrible cough!" do Our Cough Syrup will give "Why don't something for it? you you instant relief!" Smiling Service Community Pharmacy CHAS. R. PATCHEN 574 Lincoln Ave. Phone 164 a consequence, sleigh bells were ringing almost incessantly in Winnetka while the snow was well-packed. Everybody agrees that scooting along behind a team of lively horses is "the greatest sport ever" and there is an enthusiastic demand for more rides in the future. JOINS MAYNARD FORCES Lewis T. Dodds, who has been in charge of the Chicago offices of the Arthur P. Hubbell company for the past two years, has formed connections with E. P. Maynard and company, Hub- bard Woods realtors.
