Crunden of the Illinois Bell Telephone company, raised the ques- tion before the Chicago Kiwanis club recently, when he told of the mar- velous changes of the last half cen- tury. "Ben Franklin, 150 years ago, in- vited some friends to dinner, promis- ing them a cask of Madeira," he said. "As the bung was pushed in the cask, a fly came out. He observed it and remarked, that he wished he could be like this fly and come back to life 100 or 150 years hence. "Now, supposing that he could come back to life today, what would he see? "He would see over five billions of 'dollars invested in great centralized electric power plants, providing 24- hour electric service to nine million homes. "He would see in Chicago the world's greatest power pool. He would see in the Mississippi valley the + greatest electrical development of any spot on the globe. He would see great, inter-connecting, electric sys- tems, providing 24-hour electric serv- ice to the smallest village in this territory, placing at their disposal large power facilities such as obtained in large cities. "He would see suburban districts made possible, with residential and in- dustrial areas being given the same modern 'facilities as in the city. He would see decentralization of cities under way and the open spaces made possible where children might be reared with the same advantages as in cities. "He would see electric railways and railroads moving vast bodies of people; steam railroad and terminals being electrified, doing away with smoke and dirt, and improving health and sanitation. In the offing he would see the inevitable electrification of all railroads with the vast conser- vation of fuel and labor and the gen- eral saving in transportation. "He would see housewives, with ten to fifteen years of additional life added to their score through the labor-sav- ing devices that have been made pos- sible. "He would see the vast electrical facilities made possible to the poor, as well as the rich, at the same price and of the same quality. "He would see vast communicating systems whereby, for a small sum each month. the individual or any member of his family has, at his beck and call the homes of fifteen million places and industries, scattered from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from Can- ada to the Gulf. There are more tele- phones in America than in the rest of the world. There is one telephone to every five people in this State. Long distance lines join up seventy thou- sand cities and villages. Figures Show Progress of Electric Industries The remarkable increase in use of electricity in recent vears is shown in a survey of the light and power in- dustry as of the end of 1923. Accord- ing to the data covering that period there are now in the United States: 9.680.600 homes having central sta- tion electric service; 1,806,000 stores and offices using electricity from central stations; 429,500 industrial establishments us- ing electricity from central stations; 5600 electrical central station com- panies supplying current for light and power ; 110 holding companies that own and operate groups of central sta- tions; 44 State Public Service Commis- sions regulate and supervise the service; 3.500 manufacturers of electric ma- chinery and appliances; 14,138 stores selling electrical mer- chandise : 1,500 exclusive electrical stores; 12,000 electrical contractor-dealers. specialty DON'T JIGGLE PHONE HOOK "Haste makes waste," says an old - proverb and the same is true in modern telephone parlance. OF I Two baseball games, the most im- portant dual meet of the year, the in- terscholastic track meet and circus-- this is the program, jammed full of excitment and interest, which will en- tertain the athletic fans who will come to the University of Illinois, on May 16 and 17 for the annual interscholas- tic carnival. The Illinois-Michigan dual track meet will be the feature of the season. When the Illini won the indoor con- ference meet this year, Michigan was the runner-up. Illinois has not lost a dual meet to Michigan in four starts but the Wolverines have defeated Cor- nell and will undoubtedly be strong. Brownell, of Illinois and Brooker, of Michigan, will renew their duel in the pole vault. Brownell holds the world's indoor record of 13 feet 5/8 inches and the American collegiate record of 13 feet 2 inches. Captain "Pitch" Tohnson. of Illinois and DeHart Hub- bard, of Michigan, will renew their argument in the hurdles but both may have to bow to young Dan Kin- sey who swept the hurdle events in the Illinois-California meet. Notre Dame and Wisconsin will play the Illini baseball team. Both teams are likelv to be strong. The west football bleachers have been moved to the baseball diamond, increasing the permanent capacity to 7,000 and many more can be taken care of by the use of temporary bleachers. The prep athletes' meet on Saturday morning will attract large crowds of high school followers. Since the establishment of the meet in 1893, at least one record has been broken every year and 1924 is expected to maintain this tradition.
