In order to pass to this high rank much appli- cation and a tremendous amount of work is required. Frank is the first Kenilworth Scout to achieve this honor. He, has now set a pace for other troop members to follow. Some of the merit badges re- quire six months or more of conscien- tious work, and they cover widely divergenf' fields, so 'that it will: be readily seen that the honor indicates a superlative effort. Scout Watt says that he is going right ahead and win more merit badges in an endeavor to | garner more honors than any scout north of Evanston. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Watt of 338 Melrose avenue, Kenil- worth. Linus Smith of Wilmette made the Fagle Scout rank a few weeks ago. Used Cars -- All Makes "OPEN AIR SALES Cor. High School Journalists Told About News Editing John Roos, of Winnetka, and Daniel Brower, of Wilmette, editor and busi- ness manager, respectiv ely, of the New Trier News, official student organ at New Trier High school, attended ses- sions of the Mid-West Interscholastic Press association at Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern university, Saturday of last week. Dean Harrington of the Medill School of Journalism was the principal speaker at the conference, offering suggestions to the youthful journal- ists regarding the most "approved methods of editing and publishing scholastic journals. Round table discussions and a lunch- eon served at one of the campus fra- ternity houses concluded the confer-] ence. . New Trier Band Wins 2nd Place in Tourney Five years ago, we are told, the New Trier Township High School band "could scarcely play a note." Last Saturday that group of youthful musicians, under the able direction of Director Schumacher, came within five points of capturing first place in the annual state high school band tournament at Joliet. The band rep- resenting Joliet high school won first honors with a score of 92 and New Trier followed with 86.6. New Trier's contingent left Indian Hill at daybreak Saturday morning, clad in their full regalia of green and gray uniforms, acquired for them by means a fund campaign conducted recently by Lloyd Hollister, Inc., and arrived at the Joliet high school gym- nasium in time for the opening event of a busy day of. playing. At the scene of the tournament they were greeted by seven competitors and the contest began in earnest before the morning had been well under way. At New Trier's turn to play, the band arose as Director Schumacher entered, this bit of a tribute and cere- mony exciting lively applause from the large gathering of spectators. honors, the band was congratulatéd by Director Schumacher upon its ex- cellent showing. The award for sec- ond place comprised a bronze shield and a medal for each member of the band. A procession of the combined bands was an incidental feature of the tour- nament. RABIES PREVALENT Since January of this year the heads of 7 dogs and one pig examined at the diagnostic laboratory of the state health department, showed the pres- ence of rabies or hydrophobia. Most of these heads came from the southern portion of the state. This indicates a rather wide-spread prevalence: of rabies in the state, say the public health authorities. The best advice for one who has been bitten by a dog, whether mad or not, is to see a physician and do what he prescribes. For a person who has been infected with rabies organisms there is but two alternatives--one is the Pasteur treatment and the other is a fatal disease. Boys Enthusiastic Over Kenilworth Hiking Club The Junior Hiking club, which has been formed at Kenilworth for boys under Scout age, is being enthusiasti- cally received by the youngsters, and several more besides those mentioned in these columns last week have signed up to make the initial hike, it is an- nounced. The most recent recruits are: Dave Hannah, Lloyd Kingsby, John Simon, Robert Wilson and Tom White. . papers if You Want to Keep It no matter what "It" may be, see that it is safe from fire and theft and care- lessness--deposit it in a safety depos- it box in our electrically protected vaults.
