WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY, 17, 1924 'ADVENTURESS IS GREAT SHOW Musical Comedy by Legion Wins Unstinted Praise Stage lights go on, house lights go off, a twenty-piece orchestra plays pretty music, the curtain rises and the "Gay Adventuress" is underway. From 8:30 till 11:30 o'clock two capacity audiences laugh and applaud. The American ILe- gion musical comedy is a great success. It seems as if all Winnetka must have seen one of the two performances, and on every hand were heard words of praise for producer, author, actors and chorus. That the American Legion profited by the undertaking goes with- out saying but they are entitled to every thing they made since they gave more than a full hundred cents worth for every dollar. Staid critics of amateur entertain- ment seemed to be unanimous in saying that the "Gay Adventuress" was the only worth while amateur musical com- edy they had seen on the north shore. They were lavish in their praise of Mr. Howard H. Hoyt who wrote the book, the 'lyrics, the songs and then took a prominent part as a comedian known as Moritz Plinkus. His brother, Mr. Ger- ald Hoyt, who was "Levy Plunkus," also came in for a full share of appre- ciation. As the subdued partner of Plinkus he gave opportunity for many a laugh. Nor should one overlook the splendid voices of Mrs. Copthorne, Mrs. Bailey and Mrs. Robinson. They made hits with each of their songs as did Mr. Macy, Mr. Rigler and Mr. Francombe. But in addition to those who sang, there were a number who gave much of their time and effort in developing more or less minor parts. Mr. Grinnell Wylie was a plausible detective, Mr. Norman Copthorne a waiter, good and tough, Mr. Thomas J. Lynch a capable jockey and Mr. Charles Fastman a striking southern colonel. Then there were two specialty dances, one by Mr. and Mrs. Barton Walker, the other by Mrs. Edward W. Ellis and Mr. Henry Lane. Both of them were so good the audience was most insistent for more. But the chorus made the performance possible. This group of some forty young men and women worked for weeks to produce just the right effects. They were so successful that song after song had to be repeated to satisfy the demand of the audience. Two of the numbers which seemed to attract greatest attention were "Sallie" and "Raggedy Ann." In each case the well drilled chorus did their full share to make them the hits they turned out to be Behind the scenes were many who did yoeman service and gave days and nights for this musical show. Mr.Sam- uel Otis, as general chairman, was most faithful. Mrs, Clifford B. Ewart, the accompanist at rehearsals and Mrs. Har- ris, who assisted her, rendered invalu- able service, while Mr. S. Edwin Earle, in charge of publicity, Mr. George Mc- Kinney, in charge of tickets and Mrs. Ayres Boal, in charge of properties; left nothing undone to make the show a suc- cess from every angle. Winnetka Post No. 10, American Le- gion, is to be heartily congratulated for presenting such excellent entertainment to the morth shore. And the members have the satisfaction of knowing that the job they set out to do was done and done well.
