Thistlethewaite to Head Football School Three physical education courses-- football coaching, basketball coach- ing and playground direction-- are to feature the summer-school of North- western university this year. The foot- ball coaching school is no novelty at Northwestern and will be directed by Glenn Thistlethwaite, the varsity head- coach. The plan is to conduct three lectures a week on the theory of foot- ball with field work the same after- noon. Coach Thistlethwaite has set aside Monday, Tuesday and Wednes- day of each week during summer school for this work, will lecture in the morning, starting at 10:30 o'clock, and will direct actual field work in the afternoon beginning at 2 o'clock. All of the equipment of Northwestern gymnasium, one of the finest in the world, will be at the disposal of the students. Mr. Thistlethwaite, who is one of the best-known of middle western football coaches, has coached football at Illinois college, Earlham, Oak Park high school, Northwestern, and, dur- ing the summer of 1921, had charge of all athletic courses at the University of Colorado. In his sixteen years of football coaching his teams won five league championships, three Central States championships, were victorious in a total of 76 games, lost 11 and tied 2. His 1917 team at Oak Park high school scored 95 points in a twen- ty- minute half while their opponents did not advance the ball beyond the line of scrimmage. The basketball coaches' school and the school for playground directors will be directed at Northwestern uni- versity summer school this year by Prof. I. G. Kranz, assistant professor of physical education. His basketball coaches' course last summer was ex- tremely successful. This course in- cludes two days of lecturing on the theory of basketball and three days of practical work on the floor, or five hours of coaching per week. The playgrounds course also is a five-hour course--three lectures, followed by two hours of practical work. The theory of play, the planning of play- programs for schools, not only for a week but for an entire season, and the idea behind each program, is taught by Prof. Kranz. Playgrounds in the Chicago section also are visited and practical experience given the students. Supervisor Bechtold, new head of the Evanston playgrounds, has promised active co-operation with Mr. Kranz. These courses start June 23 and run for six weeks.
