8 - WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 31, 1924 COUNTRY DAY PUPILS CELEBRATE MAYTIME At 10 o'clock last Tuesday morning the North Shore Country Day school turned out to celebrate the May sea- son in song, dance and procession. Two buglars, arrayed in heraldric cos- tumes, called from all the buildings hosts of farmers, milk-maids, pirates, Robinhoods, and other gay merrymak- ers, who wound around the campus in a colorful line, singing "Summer is icumen in," "Come, lads and lassies," and other traditional May melodies. To a bower of flowers then came the May Queen, Mary Ott, and her flower girls and maidens. The queen rode in a flower-decked pony cart, her maidens carrying long ropes of flow- ers before her. After the crowning, the artists and poets came forward and with their paintings and verses to Spring, and Robinhood's band held an archery contest and gave a little play on the green, written by the fifth grade in their study of the Robinhood ballads. This was followed by many a famous old English dance and game, such as "Here come some Dukes a-riding," "King of the Barbarees," Sellenger's Round" (an old May-pole dance dat- ing from about 1450), "Bean Setting," and others. The high school boys in white gave a auarterstaff drill, the seventh and eighth grade girls danced the May- pole, an elaborate and pretty figure with the colored streamers from the pole; and at the end the guests, fac- ulty, and children all joined in a gen- eral round to complete the yearly festival. Winnetka Leader Speaks At Memorial Ceremonies Myron E. Adams, well known Win- netka civic leader, was the speaker of the day at the community memorial exercises at Evanston yesterday. The Evanston ceremonies were staged at the site of the Avenue of Elms near Patten gymnasium on the Northwestern university campus and followed a great street procession in which various civic bodies and the university: R. The exercises are scheduled for the evening of Thursday, June 12, at 8:15 o'clock. Assisting the graduating class in the ritual will be the Rev. James Austin Richards, pastor of the Winnetka Congregational church, and Allen Wolff, Jr, and Frances Anderson, members of the 1923 graduating class. The graduating class will be enter- tained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Younker, Sheridan road, at a beach party and supper next Saturday evening. A special committee of parents and members of the class are arranging the details of the graduating exer- cises. National Leader Attends Annual Camp Fire Ritual Miss Edith M.
