S WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JUNE 7, 1924 COUNTRY DAY HAS 11 GRADS All Classes to Be in Closing Exercises . Commencement week festivities are in progress at North Shore Country Day school. Last Monday was Field Day, beginning with picnic luncheon on the northeast campus, after which the low- er school gave several stunts. The most effective of these was the fifth and sixth grade circus, with parade, acrobats, ponies and clowns. The ath- letic events began at 2 o'clock on the hockey field. The whole school was divided into two sides, the Purples and Whites, each side with a senior captain, and a score was kept, the Whitee, after an exciting climb, winning over the Purples. On Tuesday, the seniors were enter- tained at luncheon on the lawn pre- pared and served by the eighth grade domestic science class. On Wednesday, at 10 o'clock, the lower school held its exercises in the gymnasium, and at 1 o'clock the annual upper school luncheon was held. At this luncheon, which is much anticipated each year, were speeches, several class stunts and songs, and the dedication of the school year book, "The Mirror." Conspicuous among the stunts this year was an es- pecially funny take-off of the "Pirates of Penzance;" while the songs, both serious and humorous, were varied. Friday, at 3:30 o'clock, the school commencement was held with Harriet Leonard, Mary Ott, Louise Sherman, Elinor Tomlinson, Marcelle Vennema, Eleanor McEwen, Isabelle Fry, Holden Anderson, Larry Burr, Percy Davis and English Malling as graduates. The Rev. James A. Richards of Winnetka gave the address. The week's activities close this eve- ning with the senior dance to be held in the gymnasium. NOTED BARITONE SIGNS WINNETKA ENGAGEMENT Continued from page 1 was the soprano soloist in this same church for 18 years. Popular with College Men Young Reinald attended the Univer- sity of New York from which he later graduated. He was the leader of the Glee club and conductor of the University Heights Choral society for four years. He continued a leader of the Glee club for several years after his grad- uation and is still the official cheer leader for all athletics at the univer- sity. He is a great favorite with col- lege men all over the country, and has done much to introduce music in the University of New York, where before it. was an unknown quantity. During the season of 1915-16 he shared honors with Geraldine Farrar on a concert tour of 36 appearances in all the principal cities of this coun- try. He made his debut in London, where he immediately won great favor, since when he has each year appeared in both London and Paris. This present summer he will make his first tour of Denmark and the Scan- dinavian countries, the land of his forbears. Sings Kipling Ballads Mr. Werrenrath sings largely in English and is one singer whose great art has an equal appeal to both men and women. He is particularly pop- ular in the songs of Kipling, for no one transmits as he does the real fire of the Kipling compositions. His "Danny Deever," "Fuzzy-Wuzzy," "Rolling Down to Rio," "On the Road to Mandalay," and many others are always great favorites. His salt water ballads and songs of the sea like "The Sea Gypsy," "Captain Stratton's Fancy," "O Falmouth is a Fine Town," "The Wreck of the Julie Plante" and "Lone Dog" are equally fine. Prob- ably no artist today sings "Duna" with the beauty that Werrenrath gives it. He is equally at home in the Negro Spirituals. Mr. Werrenrath has com- posed and published two books of songs, and is an authority on trans- lation of Scandinavian songs. This Merchant Advises in Verse to Buy at Home E. B. Taylor, the well known Cen- ter street hardware dealer, is doing some unique advertising in Winnetka Talk these days. Everyone of his reg- ular weekly advertisements is a booster for trading in the "home town" and has the unique distinction of being written in "jingle" form. While few, if any, of the advertise- ments call attention to Taylor's spe- cific business, they all emphasize the point that it is both pleasant and profitable to "do your shopping in the village" and avoid the inconveni- ences attendant upon trading away from home. The advertisements have created quite a furore in the Elm street busi- ness section and are winning com- mendation for "E. B."
