The story opens with everyone roused to the call to arms issued by President Lin- coln. During the first act, interest is borne along on the emotions of the characters who portray the life of ordinary farmfolk during that time. Milt Shanks, the "copperhead," gives an everlasting hurt to his wife when he refuses to enlist in the volunteers even though his refural means that his 16 year old son will march away with the army in is place.
