Bailey, vice president of the Chicago Trust company, died at his home at 150 Linden avenue Saturday, March 28. Funeral services were held Monday, March 30, from the Christ church, Rev. E. Ashley Gerhardt offici- ating. Mr. Bailey had been a resident of Winnetka for nearly five years. He was 82 years old, and had long been prominent in Chicago financial, church and philanthropic circles. He s.aarted his career as a clerk in a Chi- cago office. He was in the quartermas- ters' corps during the civil war and later cashier of a Kentucky bank. From Ken- tucky he went to New York for a stay of seven years, after which he came to Chicago and occupied the position of general manager of the Chicago Malle- able Iron works until 1912, when he went with the Chicago Trust company. Paid Lofty Tribute The following tribute was paid Mr. Bailey by Rev. E. Ashley Gerhard, rector of the church of which he was a member. "The death of Edward Payson Bailey, which occurred at his home in Winnetka, March 28, brought to a close a long and a distinguished career in the Episcopal church. Since the early days of his life Mr. Bailey rendered to his church service of exceptional value and occupied many positions of im- portance. Before establishing his residence in Winnetka he attended First Grace church, Chicago, and then Trinity, holding the office of Senior Warden in each of these city parishes. Soon after his coming to Winnetka he was elected Senior Warden of Christ church in 1921, which position he held until his death. "In the work of the general church he was always actively involved. He attended eight consecutive meetings of general convention as a delegate from the Diocese of Chicago, the last at Portland in 1922. He had been, since its organization, a member of the commission on the World Confer- ence on Faith and Order. He was also for some years a member of the com- mission on the Revision of the Prayer Book. Was Prominent Churchman "In the diocese Mr. Bailey for years held various important positions. He was a familiar figure at the sessions of the Diocesan convention, which he attended continuously as a delegate through a period of more than 33 years. He was a member . of the Standing committee and of the Board of Equalization. He also sat on the Board of Trustees of the Western Theological seminary and of Law- rence Hall for Boys. His interest in other Christian work in the Chicago community was attested by his mem- bership on the Board of Directors of the Young Men's Christian associa- tion, of which at one time he served as' president, and by his chairmanship of the Central States committee of the Laymen's Missionary movement, which he held from 1910 till the time of his death." Bishop Anderson was prevented by illness from attending the funeral, by the rector of the Parish in Christ church, Winnetka, on Monday, March 30. Mr. Bailey is survived by his widow and four children, Frederic, Edward, Jr., of Cleveland, Lieut. Vaughan of the U. S. Navy and Mrs. Carrol L. Cuyler of Philadelphia. Death was due to complications brought on by advancing age. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Windes, 873 Spruce street, are enjoying a sojourn of a few weeks in Washington, D.
