-- ont : 6 hath Labi and WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, APRIL 11, 1925 REBUILD FAMED LANDMARK HERE "Knollslea" to Be Revamped by School Work has been begun which is to re- store the old mansion known as Knoll- slea hall and make of it a building of the North Shore Country Day school that will fill the need for additional space until the permanent building pro- ject is completed. While it is always sad to see wreckers at work on a stately old homestead of other days, the residents and historians of Winnetka will be glad to know that from the crashing of porches will come a renovated Knoll- slea that will insure for the landmark a longer life than one could have fore- seen from its recent dilapidated condi- tion. The board of directors of the North Shore Country Day school, in view of the well-built walls of the house, voted some time ago to take off the porches, put on a new roof, renovate both inter- jor and exterior, and build a horse-shoe stairway entrance at the west end which will correspond to the present one on the Boys' gymnasium. In its projected state the place will serve for some time and greatly relieve the crowded condi- tions due to the increase in students and activity throughout the school. Is Pioneer Structure : The building is one of the oldest along the shore, and deservedly holds a place of interest in the hearts of Winnetkans. It was erected in 1870 by John Garland and for years was a private home, later becoming the main building of Girton school, and taken over in 1919 to be the Boys' building of the North Shore Country Day school. Situated on quite an eminence, it must have been a stately old mansion in the earlier days when carriages drove under its broad porte cochere. Inside, the rooms are dignified and high, fireplaces in each one and tall round topped doors. A "conservatory" once held flowers. The cupola on the house commanded wide views of the surrounding country and the blue lake to the east. A broad veranda ran over half way around the house. But it is for the trees on the grounds that Win- netka may be chiefly grateful. The owner of the estate loved and planted trees, so it is due to him that the North Shore Country Day school may today boast of dense shade and some of the most magnificient trees in Winnetka. In the spring the deep rus- sets and crimsons of the many Norwe- gian maples are contrasted against the darker greens and blacks of elms, and evergreens, while beautiful horse chest- nuts and a purple beech vie with the lilacs for honors. Spring, summer, au- tumn, each is a pageant of well-blended and contrasted shades and colors in fol- iage. Birds are thick in the branches for the children to watch. May Day and Commencement festivities are lovely in the deep shade. So it is that with the restoring of the place for a rather long "temporary" use by North Shore Country Day school, John Garland's stately old home, Knoll- slea, is given a new lease on life as an historical landmark of Winnetka.
