16 WINNETKA TALK October 24, 1925 --, SEES NO LET-UP IN AUTO REGISTRATIONS Illinois Now Boasts 1,125,000 Mo- tor Cars; Point of Saturation Far in Distance The registration of passenger auto- mobiles in Illinois this year will reach 1,125,000, Secretary of State Louis L. Emmerson estimated this week. The estimate is based upon the increase in registration up to this time as com- pared with the same period last year. If this total is reached it will exceed last year's total of 981,859 by 143,141. Up to October 1, 1,082,148 passenger car licenses had been issued, a consi- derable increase over the total for the entire year 1924. Truck licenses on the same date totaled 157,131 as com- pared with 140,706 issued in 1924, and dealers licenses were 4,523 as compared with 4225 last year. The fees of the automobile depart- ment available for paying off state highway bonds and highway main- tenance are much larger this year. Over $12,000,000 During 1924 the automobile depart- ment of Secretary Emmerson's office collected fees totaling $11,546206. Up to October 1, this year $12,774,981 had been collected by the department, or an increase of $1,228,775 over the en- tire year 1924. Illinois ranks fifth among the states in the total number of cars registered, being exceeded only by New York, California, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The number of all motor vehicles registered in the United States in 1924 was 17,591 981; an increase of approxi- mately 2,500,000, or 17 per cent over the previous year. There is one mo- tor car for every seven persons in the United States. One for Every 6.8 Persons Illinois is slightly under the total with one car for every 6.8 persons. It is evident, therefore, that we are far from the saturation point in Illinois at least. If we had as many cars per capita as California our present regis- tration would be practically double, (Vow HE WILL THERE IS BUT ONE BRAIN POWER Once upon a time Benjamin Franklin made this remark: "There is but one power that actuates the brain--it is Learn- ing." Franklin's eyesight began. failing and he wore glasses so that his learning might proceed. Here is a service of knowledge and courtesy. 15 years of successful practice amounting to over two million auto- mobiles. In planning for the future there- fore, and in making laws, we must pre- pare for a still greater increase of au- tomobiles than we now have. As con- gestion on the highway increases, safe- ty provisions on the part of the law- makers and law enforcers must in- crease and drivers themselves must be more efficient. CATHOLIC LEAGUE MEETS The North Shore Catholic Woman's League held its opening meeting at the Winnetka Woman's club Tuesday of last week.
