1925 November 7, WINNETKA TALK 19 OPERA PREMIERE MOST BRILLIANT IN HISTORY "Aida" with Rosa Raisa in Title Role to Open Next Week's Program Filled to its capacity of nearly 4,000 seats, the historic Chicago Auditorium was the scene Tues- day night of one of the most brilliant and enthusiastic premiere perform- ances of grand opera ever witnessed in America, if not throughout the world. The occasion was the opening of the current season,--the fourth of the Chicago Civic Opera and the fifteenth of a resident opera company in Chi- cago--with the presentation, for the first time in Chicago, of "Der Rosen- kavalier," by Richard Strauss. So- cially a triumph and artistically a transcendent success, it was one of the most notable premieres of the times. Contrary to the usual custom, the opening production was not one of tragedy or ponderous spectacle, but a work in a playful mood with entranc- ing, though difficult music. The dis- tinguished audience responded to the comic situations of the opera as well as the musical high spots with much enthusiasm and the curtain calls at the conclusion were long and insistent. The demand for seats for the open- ing performance was far greater than the capacity, and the call for tickets for following performances was such as to indicate that the Chicago Civic Opera company is entering upon the most popular season in its history. In addition to "Der Rosenkavalier" on the opening night, the schedule for the first week included, "Carman" Thurs- day evening; "The Masked Ball," Sat- urday afternoon; "Rigoletto" at pop- ular prices Saturday evening; "La Traviata," Sunday afternoon; and "Martha," Monday evening, Novem- ber 9 The program for the second week includes "Aida," Tuesday, November 10, with Raisa, Van Gordon, Cortis, Kipnis and Lazzari, Polacco conduct- ing; Wednesday "Othello," with Saw- ver (debut) Claessens, Marshall, Rim- ini, Kipnis, Mojica and Oliviere, Mo- ranzoni conducting; Thursday, "II Trovatore" with Muzio, Homer, Kerr, Cortis, Bonelli, and.
