ie April 24, 1926 WINNETKA TALK 39 At the Woman's Club "Had it not been for women, three fourths of all the finest music in the world would not have been written." Such was the opening sentence of the talk given by Felix Boroski, well known critic, at the annual meeting of the Winnetka Woman's club last Tuesday. Mr. Boroski went on to say that this influence of women was felt in four di- rections, namely, 1, the inspiration women have given to composers: 2, the practical assistance women have given to composers, copying manuscripts, etc; 3, as musical interpreters; 4, as crea- tors of music. The inspiration of women was most generously felt in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the age of Chari- ty, when the troubadors roamed FEur- ope, glorifying all women in song for the love of one. With the advent of professional com- posers, the influence of individual wom- en was felt on the work of the com- posers. Most of the greatest pieces of work of practically all the great com- posers, Beethoven, Schubert, Wagner, Brahms, can be traced to the inspira- tion of some woman. This inspiration to composers has been perhaps, wom- an's greatest contribution to music. Women began to write music in the times of the troubadors but the senti- ment of the day did not allow her to receive credit for her work and the composer usually attributed her work to some man. Opera came into existence at the end of the sixteenth century and wom- en wrote many of the operatic works. Today, woman's place as a creator of music is fully as important as man's. At noon, a delightful luncheon was served by the social committee, and was followed by a business meeting, at which the annual reports of the com- mittee of the club were given. The biennial convention of the Fed- eration of Women's clubs will be held in Atlantic City, May 24 to June 5. The State convention of the federa- tion will be held at the Edgewater Beach hotel, May 18-21.
