Hupmobile Six Hupmobile Eight NEW METHOD TAUGHT Children Like New "Melody Way" Method of Instruction in Music; Based on Folk Songs In the music demonstration now in progress at Greeley school by Mrs. Arthur H. Brooks, eight pupils from Miss Ethel Theis' third grade and eight boys from Miss Mayme McCarter's fifth grade are working with true Greeley spirit to demonstrate on the piano that "The Melody Way" is easy to play. The progress of this demon- stration is being followed with the ob- ject of determining if it is desirable for introduction in the public schools of Winnetka. The enthusiasm and confidence of the pupils became evident when a number from each class volunteered to become demonstrators at the meeting of the Music Guild this week, when the course was the subject for consideration. The ideal in this course of piano class instruction is to captivate and maintain from the beginning the child's interest in music, and to win his grow- ing love and appreciation of good =4 Sedan, five-passenger, $2345. The "Melody Way" pieces are songs, which stimu- late the poetic sense and influence this subtle quality in the playing of these simple little melodies. The children are led to feel that the very essence of music is the expression of a mood. Based on Folk Songs The "Melody Way" is based almost entirely upon folk songs and correlates with the children's experience in public school music. The same modern teach- ing principles used in reading, language, and public school vocal music are ap- plied in this plan of class piano instruc- tion. Correspondingly, competition and group confidence are stimulated. Ob- servation and imitation promote early progress. And the acquaintance with music literature, all facts about music its vocabularies and terminology can be taught more economically and more effectively to groups than to individuals, for group interest begets individual in- terest. Rythmic games and ensemble play- ing are the regular proceedure in piano classes. All private teachers benefit by thig system which places music within the reach of everyone. As class pupils advance they require private instruc- tion in advanced technic and musician- ship, and artist teachers are relieved from the drudgery of teaching the ele- ments to each individual. Also the beginning pupils of private teachers may enroll in the piano classes, where time is allotted for teaching the fundamentals thus giving the private teacher her full lesson time to instruct in the finer phases of the art. By this standardized plan of class in- struction. piano music can be placed on a credit basis in the schools. The individual technique and self-instruc- tion materials are exempolified and are being further developed in the "Melody Way" plan.
