In 1920, when the last official census was taken, the county's population was slightly over 3,000,000 or an average of 3,273 per square mile. Based on these forecasts, Illinois electric light and power companies will spend millions of dollars in extensions, says R. F. Schuchardt, Chicago, chair- man of the committee. Three years and more than $40,000 have been spent in preparation of the report, which covers nine Middle West states. Although Illinois' population is ex- pected to increase from 6,877,737 to 9,490,000 during the quarter century, the report indicates that the use of elec- tricity will increase five times as fast as the population. On an average, Illinois now produces for each person 678 kilowatt-hours annually. By 1950 this use will have increased to 2,000 kilowatt-hours, and enormous enlarge- ment of facilities must be made to meet this demand, the report states.
