May 22, 1926 WINNETKA TALK RIDING CLUB RECEIVES LETTER FROM PERSHING Regrets Inability to Attend Din- ner; Tells of His Love of Horseback Riding Gen. John J. Pershing was forced to decline with regret an invitation from the Indian Hill Riding club to attend the annual dinner of the club held Tuesday, May 11, at the Indtan Hill Country club, but the club re- ceived from the distinguished Ameri- can a letter that sets forth in an in- teresting way his genuine apprecia- tion of horseback riding as an aid to health and an wunexcelled form of recreation. The letter, Daughaday, reads: "Your very cordial note extending me an invitation to be present at the annual dinner of the Indian Hill Rid- ing Club was received some days ago. It is a matter of real regret that I find it impossible to accept as I am sure it will be a most enjoyable occasion. "Having been accustomed to horse- back riding all my life, I can speak with some confidence as to its bene- fits and delights. As a means of daily recreation it can hardly be excelled. A horseback ride of several days would be an ideal way to spend a va- cation. I took such a ride down into Virginia not so long ago and shall re- peat it whenever possible. It affords the best opportunity that T know of to enjoy the open air and the attrac- tions of rural scenery. "Horseback riding encourages the breeding of good horses of all classes. In my opinion the time has not ar- rived when we can do without the horse, and it should be the wish of every lover of the horse that the time may never come. "With thanks for your kind invita- tion, believe me Very sincerely yours, John J. Pershing."
